Karen Rock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2011.
Karen Alfonso Rock, of Altamonte Springs, Florida passed away on January 21st, 2011. Karen had as beautiful a life as she was in life. Always the cheerful, adventurous, loving girl, mother and wife, she enjoyed her family, friends, tennis, travelling and the Gators. Karen will be remembered by so many that she also loved. Her life was too short as she bravely endured the debilitating Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) disorder she valiantly fought for over 5 years. Through it she maintained her spirit, courage and loving nature. Born in Tampa, Karen was the Swan of the Academy of Holy Names and went on to graduate from the University of Florida where she was active in Delta Gama Sorority and in 1959 was homecoming queen where she was featured in Life Magazine. Karen received her Master's degree in education from the University of South Florida and taught in Tampa before she moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida where she taught emotionally and physically challenged children while raising her family. Karen was a friend of Bill W and was always there for her many friends and family. She taught through example how to live, love and carry on through adversity. A special acknowledgement and appreciation for the extraordinary care given to Karen is for her 24 / 7 angels Maxi, Marilyn and Christine.

Karen was pre- deceased by her husband Leo P Rock and parents Matias J Alfonso and Olevia E. Risse Alfonso. She is survived by her son Richard Adams (Barbra) – grandchildren Belle and Harry Adams , Ocoee , Florida and daughter Leigh Adams - grandchild Alex Matias Adams , Altamonte Springs, Florida , brothers Rex Alfonso (Jacqueline) Houston, Texas and Don Alfonso (Sandy) Tampa , Florida, as well as nieces and nephews Lisa Alfonso Speros, Andrea Alfonso, Monica Alfonso Berry, Don Christopher Alfonso, Alison Alfonso and Lauren Alfonso , grand-nieces Mia Alfonso and Ava Speros , grand-nephew Matias Speros and cousins in Kansas, Illinois, Texas and Florida. She will forever be in our memories and heart and will be deeply missed.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday January 25, 2011 from 5:30 to 6:30PM at Marsicano-B. Marion Reed-Stowers with funeral services beginning at 6:30PM. A graveside service will then be held on Wednesday January 26, 2011 at 11AM at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park.

Karen was great friend to me and George and we both will miss her. She was bigger than life in many ways and I was always happy to be in her presence. She had uncanny ability to know the right thing to say.

I met your beautiful Karen when I moved to Florida as a Senior at the Academy in 1957. Karen was so kind and sweet to me, as it was hard being the new girl in class. The next time I saw Karen was at our 50th Reunion and she was more beautiful then than before. The following words have helped me in the passing of my loved ones: "The greatest gift of love you can give your Mom is the acceptance of her absence in this earthly life for the knowing that she is experiencing great love, peace and joy in the arms of her Heavenly Father."

I went through grade school and much of high school with Karen and was very sorry to hear about her passing. I saw her about two years ago and had no idea that we were both friends of Bill W. It would have been great to share that with her. My thoughts are with her family and many friends.

Richard, Leigh and family,
We are so sorry to hear about Karen's passing. Leo and Karen were the best neighbors and good friends that we could have ever had. They will be missed by the whole Paoloni Family. We will always keep them and your family's in our prayers.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. The Karen I knew, was a truly gracious human being. Her love for Leo and her children, was so obvious in the conversations that we shared. I never knew when I might see her, but when I did... It was always an enlightening, cheerful experience. I came to know her as a co-worker when she signed on as a substitute, working with severely emotionally disturbed students. She handled these "at risk" children with a soft spoken voice, a gentle smile and the most expressive eyes. She even baked us cookies! I have wonderful memories of our working hours together...and I am greatful that she was once an important chapter of my life. "Sing with the angels." Dear Karen, and guide your beloved family and friends thru this time of sadness and loss, with warm breezes "as hugs" and gentle rain as "sweet kisses." May you sleep in peace, dear Lady...

I'm sorry for your loss. The first time I met Karen was at the 50 year anniversary of graduation from St. Leo College Prep School, for Leo Rock. I worked on that reunion with Leo, because he was my friend from high school days. I found Karen to be a very warm and caring person.
The second occasion I happened to see Karen was at Leo's funeral & reception. I've been concerned about her health ever since, and have wondered how she was doing. I'm sorry for all her suffering, but now she is whole & mobile again, in Heaven with her family and her Savior.

Dear Family:

At this time you need comfort. We can gain comfort from the scriptures.
1 Corinthians 1:3-4

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ

I first met Karen and her family when we were 14, and although I haven't seen her for many years, I talked to her a few times and kept abreast of the family through her mother and Rex. Like her mother she was truly unique, and they both have a special place among my favorite memories.

May God hold you in the palm of his hand. . .

I will always remember when I first was introduced to Karen Rock and her loving husband, Leo. They were truly a special couple. I am blessed to have known them both. Karen was such a loving and caring person. I loved her for the grateful heart that she always had. She was a woman of wisdom and I was fortunate enough to learn alot from her. She had so much patient and was able to endure her illness with no complaining. I recognize that God had given us a beautiful treasure, Ms. Karen A. Rock. Love Always, MAXIE

Karen was a light in my life for over 15 years. We shared movies, parties, beach trips and so much more. Her courage going through the painful loss of her beloved Leo while she was losing her ability to walk and even talk through the MSA was unbelievable. She was my hero. She dressed up and "showed up" right to the last week of her life. She gave so much to so many. She was such a humble woman, she had no idea of the incredible impact her life had on so many. She had an indominable spirit and a great sense of humor.Selfishly, I am going to miss her a great deal, but I am grateful that she has been released from the terrible debility she had to endure. I imagine her joining Leo, Myrt, Bill and so many others having a great time in heaven.

My mother was the most beautiful person inside and out I will ever know. She was my best friend, she always accepted me for who I am and listened to every adventure I seemed to get myself into and loved and was there for me always. I miss her very much. It comforts me she is with Leo, (who was also first like my mom, to be there for me and accepted my adventurous nature) and her parents, and I pray she can still hear me when I need her or feel alone. She is at peace now. Love you mama.......

Karen made such a tremendous contribution of unconditional love and support to the rearing of my three sons: Joe, Sam and Hank - we will never forget her and our family dinners on Sunday evenings after Mass. She was such a beautiful person with a perpetual smile on her face that could light up a room! Our deepest sympathies, prayers and thoughts are with Leigh, Richard and the entire family. WE LOVE YOU ALL DEARLY! Elisa, Joe, Sam and Hank

I am so sorry for your loss. I hadn't seen Karen until our 50th reunion at AHN. She was as beautiful, warm and friendly as I remebered her. It was a pleasure to be in her company, to meet Leo and spend time answering the burning question of the moment "so, what've you been doing for the last 50 years?" My deepest sympathy..

January 23, 2011

Karen was one of the most thoughtful, forthright & beautiful persons I have ever been blessed to be close to. She treated me with all of the love of a Mom even when we butted heads [which stopped abruptly once I got sober =:>]. I hope she is playing tennis & bridge and hanging out with Leo, my Dad, who loved her so much it kept him with us a few extra years.
