Kathleen Marie Smith ("Kathi") died peacefully on July 17, 2018 in Temecula, CA surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident of Walnut Creek, CA. Kathi was born in San Francisco on March 15, 1951, the daughter of the late Edward C. Freiling and Eileen D. Freiling. Kathi grew up in the Sunset District of San Francisco where she attended St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School and later Convent of the Sacred Heart and Mercy High School. After moving to Virginia in 1969, she graduated with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University in May of 1974 obtaining a BS Degree in Biology. She later obtained M.A Degree from Stanford University in June 1987 in Communication – Screenwriting. Kathi married John R. Smith on June 2, 1979. They had two children, Marie Vianney Helene and Remy Jean-Marie Vianney, both died pre-birth and are buried in St Mary's Cemetery in Oakland with their maternal great, great grandparents, John and Ellen Lynn. Kathi was a fully professed member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS). She belonged to the group that met near Cristo Rey Carmelite Convent in San Francisco. Kathi loved the Holy Office which she received as a Carmelite tertiary as well as praying the rosary. She worked several years as a sales rep and was consistently a top performer, receiving numerous awards. Kathi also enjoyed art and loved to create beautiful paintings. She is survived by her brothers and sister: Michael J. Freiling, J. Peter Freiling, Christopher F. Freiling, Stephen A. Freiling, M. Therese Freiling and Paul T. Freiling as well as six first cousins and 24 nieces and nephews and 8 grand nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to join us for a celebration of Kathi's life. On Friday July 28th, there will be viewing from 5pm to 7pm and Rosary at 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary (500 Westlake Ave, Daly City, CA 94014). Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Cecilia's Church on Saturday July 28 at 12pm. (2555 17th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94116). This will be followed by burial service at Holy Cross (1500 Mission Rd, Colma, CA 94014) .
