TRAVERS, Kevin Russell

After a wonderful, fulfilling and satisfying life, Kevin passed away on his 57th wedding anniversary, at 83 years of age. Kevin was first and foremost a family man. He will be greatly missed by his entire beloved family: his wife Janet (nee Speranzini), his five amazing children and eleven grandchildren; Karen and her daughter Francoise, daughter Laura (Hugh MacKinnon) and their four children; Joseph (Samantha Butwell), Kevin, Christina and Peter; son Mark (Tammy McIntosh) and their children Darren, Amber and Paige; son Glen (Helen Orr) and their children Estelle (Jason King), Erica-Jayde and Jennine Lauren (Sean Paul), and son Kevin Jerome. Kevin also leaves three great-grandchildren: Evan, Greyden and Avery. He is predeceased by his parents Alphonsus and Catherine Travers and brother, Dr. Jerome Travers of Summit, New Jersey. He is survived by his sisters Doris Coleman and Sheila Malcolmson and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Kevin was raised in St. Patrick's Parish in Hamilton, Ontario. He graduated from Cathedral Boys' High School and at nineteen entered St. Augustine's Seminary to study for the priesthood. He withdrew after five years and enrolled in Hamilton Teachers' College where he met his bride-to-be. In 1958, Kevin applied to the Dept. of Northern Affairs and with his growing family lived and taught the Inuit in Chesterfield Inlet, N.W.T. In 1961, he joined the Hamilton-Wentworth Separate School Board. As he continued studies in education, he rose to Vice Principal and Principal. In 1969, he sat and wrote his Inspectors' Papers and applied to the Metropolitan Toronto Separate School Board where he acted as Area Superintendent until his retirement in 1989. Because of his deep desire to be of service to others he studied for two years to qualify as pastoral and palliative caregiver. He volunteered at Toronto General for several years and later for ten years at Calgary's Rockyview Hospital. At the same time Kevin began assisting in the R.C.I.A programs as a catechist at the Church of the Epiphany and Holy Spirit in Toronto and St. Patrick's and St. Albert the Great in Calgary. Kevin received great joy in bringing the Holy Eucharist to the residents of the MacKenzie Towne Care Centre and McKenzie Towne Retirement Residence and singing in the Resurrection Choir for the funeral masses in the parish. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. (Viewing will be from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.) A Reception will follow. Kevin's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church (10 Prestwick Drive SE, Calgary) on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. A Reception will follow.
