Colonel Larry W. Neale (U.S. Army, Ret.) passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017. He was born on January 10, 1939 in King William, Virginia and was a long time member of Bethany Baptist Church. In 1960 he graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Virginia State University and received a Regular Army (RA) Commission through its ROTC program. Following courses completed through the University of Northern Colorado's Behavior Management Studies, he received a MS in Public Administration from Shippensburg University in 1970.

Col. Neale's military achievements in the Adjutant General Corps garnered him numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit. His military service included assignments in Puerto Rico, Panama, Vietnam, the Pentagon, West Germany, and he was selected to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, PA. As Professor of Military Science at Hampton University, he was honored as the first recipient of the University's Distinguished Service Award in 1981. Assistant Chief of Staff at the 7th Signal Command was his last military assignment. Upon his retirement the flag was flown at the US Capitol in his honor. Following his retirement in1983, he became a successful entrepreneur and enjoyed family, travel, boating and golf until the onset of his extended illness.

Col. Neale was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Eunice Neale, and brothers Elwood and Richard Neale. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 57 years, Ruby Neale; two beloved daughters Tammy Neale Ackerman (Eric) and Tracey Neale; four grandchildren Jamisen and Trey Taylor, Emebet and Eyasu Neale; a step-granddaughter, Alexandra Ackerman; a great-grandson Vincent; a loving sister Carrie (Alvin) Washington; a sister-in-law (Shirley Neale); two Bermuda sisters-in-law (Lorraine Ingham and Betty John); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and long-time friends.

I am so sorry to learn Colonel Neale has passed. He deeply impressed and influenced me with his commitment and dedication and tremendous intelligence and understanding of human nature. He was an outstanding credit to our Nation, the U.S. Army and particularly Hampton University as head of the their ROTC Department of Military Science. Through his efforts, he was responsible for commissioning hundreds of U.S. Army Officers with many of them still serving our Nation today. He always told his cadets to "Reach for the stars, and if you miss them grab the moon." His inspiration produced a lot of star grabbers! God blessed me with the honor of knowing him and serving him with my heart and soul. He truly brought out the best in all who knew him.

The Neale Family: Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. We were so sorry to hear of COL Neale's passing. Col Neale will always have a place in our hearts. I was his secretary for the three years while he was the Professor of Military Science at Hampton University. A great person and mentor.

Cherish the memories, days, months, and years; HE IS FREE! May he RIP.

It really saddens me to hear about the loss of Col. Larry Neale. He was indeed a great inspiration to me in 1959 when I went to Virginia State as freshman. I did not have a clue about a major or the direction I wanted to go while in college. Initially, I wanted to pursue auto mechanics. After meeting Col. Larry Neale and others, I decided on Business Administration. My decision was made because Larry impressed me as a business major and he always looked good and carried a briefcase. I modeled Larry as a good example and for those reasons and others, I received a Bachelors Degree from Virginia State University. Larry, I truly owe you a debt of gratitude,
