LAWRENCE M. SMITH JR. CALAIS - Lawrence "Larry" Smith Jr., went to meet his Savior Jan. 6, 2009. Larry was born Sept. 6, 1956, the son of Ann (Crowley) Smith and Lawrence Smith Sr. He attended Calais schools, graduating in 1974. Directly after high school, Larry served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He was an active member of Calais Church of God, where he loved to go to "putter around," and also was devoted to being a part of the Calais Church of God Soup Kitchen. Larry is survived by his wife, Belinda Smith; his 16 children, Dianna Atcheson and her husband, Randy, Kristie Butler, Adam Smith, Sarah Pierson and her husband, Cristian, Angie Smith, Rebekah Smith, Scott Smith, Brian Smith, Kevin Smith, Krystal Smith, Melissa Smith, Jesse Smith, Logan Smith and Matthew Smith of Calais, Ashleigh Smith of Boston, and Raycheal Zanes and her husband, Walter Sr., of Laconia, N.H.; six grandchildren, Riley, Caleb, Montana, Molly, Amiyah and Walter Jr.; his mother, Ann Caswell; his sister, Jo-Anne Bartlett and her friend, Shane; his brother, Gary Smith and his wife, Amy, of New York; a niece, Amber Phillips and her husband, Kevin, of St. Stephen, New Brunswick; and a nephew, Jeremiah Smith and his family of Texas. He is also remembered by close friends, Bill and Linda Moffett. Larry was predeceased by his father, Lawrence Smith Sr.; and by his stepfather, Bill Caswell. At Larry's request, there will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Calais Church of God, 9 Germain St., Calais, with Pastor Richard Pant? officiating. Burial will be at Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calais Church of God Soup Kitchen, care of Jo-Anne Bartlett, P.O. Box 1066, Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.maysfuneralhome.com. This is a real loss. Larry's dad was a friend of mine as well as a volunteer for my handyman program. He was always so proud of his son and what he had done for all of those children. Our prayers certainly go out to you all.
