Lisa HAMPSON Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Mar. 22 to Mar. 23, 2017.
HAMPSON, Major Lisa Anne P.Eng., CD
(née Chalkley)
Commanding Officer
7 Intelligence Company
28 November 1966 - 19 March 2017
It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Major Lisa Hampson on 19 March 2017 following a brief illness. A true citizen-soldier, Lisa has served her country as a Military Engineering Officer, Intelligence Officer and Public Servant for over thirty years. 16528, Maj. Hampson was among the first women to attend Royal Roads Military College and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the Royal Military College in 1988. She also earned the additional degrees of Master of Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1995, and Bachelor of Journalism from University of King's College, Halifax in 1997. Following her initial service as a Regular Force Military Engineer, Major Hampson served as an Intelligence Officer, in the Reserve Force, in the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI). She left the CDI in late 2005 to join the Director General of Environment in the infrastructure and environment group, remaining with the Department of National Defence (DND) as a public servant, where she managed the federal contaminated site action program for DND and set up the cost sharing agreement for the remediation of Mid-Canada RADAR Line. She was promoted into the Environmental Engineering group in Director General Military Engineering in 2008, where she managed and advanced many of the Department's complex remediation and Unexploded Ordinance Disposal clearance files. Whether it was clearing unexploded bombs off indigenous lands or remediating former military site soils, her creativity, problem solving and relationship building skills succeeded in advancing and closing some of the most challenging projects in the portfolio. Her military career highlights include being attached to the US Army in Afghanistan in 2009/2010 working to defeat the enemy's Improvised Explosive Devices, taking command of 7 Intelligence Company in June 2012, and being given Freedom of the City of Ottawa by Mayor Jim Watson in June 2016. Beloved mother to sons Morgan Riley and Brendan Riley (Seattle). Beloved daughter of Vivian Chalkley and the late Patricia Chalkley of Niagara Falls. Treasured gift to her birth mother, Dr. Karen March (Carleton University) and her birth father, Douglas Witts (Thorold). Dear sister of Stephen Witts (Leslie) of Carleton Place and David March (Hamilton). Deeply missed by her friends and colleagues but especially her devoted husband, LCol James Hampson and her menagerie of pets. A visitation will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean on Friday, 24 March 2017 from 17:00 – 19:00. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, 25 March 2017 at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 70 James St. (at Kent) at 10:30, followed by a reception at the Army Officers Mess (149 Somerset St. W). In lieu of flowers a donation to 7 Intelligence Company Association, would be appreciated. Condolences or tributes may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com

Lisa, you were a great friend and mentor to me and you will be sorely missed. Beef Dips at the 4 Mile won't be the same with out you. You were my source of Flying Unicorns and could be counted on to deliver my daily intake of "all things weird". You inspired me to challenge the collective and to do what is right. Rest in Peace Lisa

Lisa was a good friend and colleague. She was a kind and thoughtful person who wouldn't hesitate to help someone in need. She was a unique individual who also wasn't afraid of challenges or being different, especially when it came to her fashion choices in "designer" shoes and matching accessories. She would often drop by to ask me for my opinion. I will miss her witty sense of humour and friendship. She was taken too soon from this world. RIP Lisa

Simply put: the best officer I've ever had in my years of service. She would truly fight for her troops through thick and thin and made sure to promote our well-being. I cannot adequately express the sadness that is felt with this unexpected and sudden loss. I am crushed by the thought of not being able to hear another one of her amusing stories or having her share more of her much-desired wisdom. She fought what was right and kept true to herself. R.I.P., Ma'am.

In the time I have known Lisa she was always willing to lend a hand or show off her new weird and wacky shoes (they were great). She will be missed by me and by all that knew her.

Lisa was a good friend and colleague. She was very much a people person, ready to help others at the drop of a hat and treated everyone with kindness and respect. She was a very unique individual who wasn't afraid of being different, as often evidenced by her "designer" shoes and matching accessories for which she frequently asked my opinion on. I will miss her witty sense of humour and friendship. She left this world way too soon. RIP
