Lola Flowers Obituary

Published by Spectrum & Daily News from Feb. 16 to Feb. 18, 2014.
Lola Platts Flowers passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born on December 6, 1920 in Lyman, Wyoming to John and Irene Rollins Platts. She was one of 17 children. She migrated to California during World War II and worked in the Consolidated Aircraft plant in San Diego where she met Buck Flowers. They were married September 14,1943, in Lyman, Wyoming. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1958. All four of their children were born and lived in the San Fernando Valley, CA until they moved to St. George, UT in 1971.

Lola was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many various callings throughout her life. In California she was a Primary teacher for many years. In St. George she served as her ward librarian for about ten years. She served a mission at the Brigham Young home, Jacob Hamblin home and also worked in the St. George Temple. She reminded us often that she would take a daily nap, but only when she was reading her scriptures! Lola taught her children and grandchildren by example, ever encouraging all her loved ones to remain faithful despite life's trials and tribulations.

'Cranny' Lola was many things to many people. 'Aunt Lu to you' was a gentle admonishment she gave to her many nieces and nephews if they called her by her first name. You might have seen her driving around town with the license plates, AUNTLU2U! She loved having company and always opened her home to family members who needed a place to stay in St. George. Some of Lola's favorite things were: Days of Our Lives, Diet Dr. Pepper, Matlock, reading her scriptures, reading the newspaper, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, card games, the Utah Jazz, journaling, genealogy, crafts, being thrifty, being creative with household items (rubber bands, straight pins, shower caps), cracked wheat, Lowry's Seasoning Salt, expired food (it's still good), making her own jewelry, shoes and purses that match, and decorating extensively for her favorite day, Christmas. It's amazing to note that at the age of 93 she was STILL beating all her grandchildren at her beloved Scrabble!

She loved her family and friends unconditionally. Lola was our angel on earth and is now in enjoying her reward in heaven; reunited with her husband Buck, beloved son Kevin, son in law Maurice Porter, brothers and sisters Joey, Frosty, Sis, Maxine, Essie, Nyda, Norma, and sis in law Vonda. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our precious mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister but we are very grateful to have had her with us for so many wonderful years.

She is survived by her children: Lana and Frank Emerson, Craig and Linda Flowers, Lori and Ed Burgess, Glenda Fox; ten grandchildren: Steven, Scott, Becky, Brett, Bucky, Erik, Duke, Colt, Beau, and Kyle; 24 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Mellie, Lamond, and Hal; and two sisters, Renee and Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.R. 'Buck' Flowers and son, Kevin Ray Flowers.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, prior to services, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., both at Metcalf Mortuary. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
