Lonnie Robert Darrah, a hardworking and stoic man, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, in Grand Rapids, MI. Born on June 18, 1970, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to Robert and Lonna Darrah. Lonnie grew up on the family farm, where he developed a deep love for agriculture and farm equipment. From a young age, he became his family's mechanic, a role that he embraced with skill and dedication. In addition to his passion for farming, Lonnie also enjoyed drawing and working on his three-wheel ATV as a child.
Lonnie graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1988 and went on to attend Iowa Lakes Farm Mechanic School, where he earned a technical degree specializing in farm implements. His first job after graduation was at Peterson Farm Equipment in Ruthven, IA, where he quickly earned a reputation for his talent and expertise in working on farm machinery. One of his proudest projects was rebuilding an old Ford three-quarter-ton pickup truck, replacing the box with a custom wood frame.
In 1993, Lonnie welcomed his first son, Michael, into the world, followed by his second son, Matthew, in 1995. Though his work often demanded much of his time, Lonnie always made time for his sons. During harvest season, he would travel directly from work to attend Michael's football games, only to return to the farm afterward to finish his duties. Lonnie cherished the moments he spent with his boys and always wished for more time with them.
Later in life, Lonnie connected with Machelle Fanson, and the two bonded over their shared love of caring for horses. Their year and a half together was filled with happiness, and their relationship brought joy to both their lives.
Lonnie is preceded in death by his grandparents. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family, including his son's, Michael (Anne) Darrah and Matthew (Brandi) Darrah; grandchildren Camryn, Morgan, Quinten, Lillian, and Mia; his parents Robert and Lonna Darrah; his fiancée Machelle Fanson; and his sister Sheila Mohrman.
Lonnie will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering work ethic, and his deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with the family's wishes public services will be held at Howardsville Gospel Chapel, 53441 Bent Rd, Marcellus, MI 49067, with a time for visiting beginning at 9:00 a.m., until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Nick Dimmick officiating.
