CAMPBELL, Margaret Florence
June 1, 1925 – Mimico, Ontario
November 23, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
In her 91st year, Margaret passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on November 23, 2015. Margaret was born in Mimico, ON on June 1, 1925 to Alex J Campbell and Catherine Urquhart Campbell. She attended school in Ontario in Port Hope, Maple Grove and Bowmanville High School. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1950 and continued her education to become a Kindergarten Specialist. Her career during the next six years brought her to Brampton and Toronto. Seeking new challenges she moved to Calgary in 1957 and completed a B.of Ed. in 1960, while teaching High School English at Crescent Heights until 1966. Academically inclined, Margaret proceeded to an MA at the University of Calgary, graduating in 1970. During this time she moved to Medicine Hat in 1968 to become an English professor at Medicine Hat College from where she retired in 1987. From 1975 to 1978 she studied to complete a Ph.D. in Renaissance Literature from the University of Calgary. Since 1990, she has resided in Varsity Acres. Margaret contributed generously to academic associations and community groups, as President of the Faculty Association at Medicine Hat College, President of University Women's Club, President of Medicine Hat Family Services and an Elder at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Medicine Hat for 10 years. Margaret always took pride in her Scottish heritage and ancestors, having a keen interest in genealogy and her roots back to Scotland and Glengarry County in Ontario. She loved music and sang in four different choirs. She participated in three different book clubs often leading stimulating discussion. She enjoyed nature and the serenity of long peaceful walks by the Bow River. She took great pride in her home sharing warm hospitality to relatives and many friends. A remarkable lady has passed and she will long be remembered by all whom she touched. She is survived by one sister Christena Tighe, eight nieces, two nephews and a brother-in-law Elmer Higgins. She was predeceased by her sister Catharine (Higgins) B.of N.Sc. of Cranbrook, BC, a nephew Brian Tighe, and a brother–in-law Murray Tighe of Bowmanville, ON. Funeral Services will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W.) on Monday, November 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice. In living memory of Margaret Campbell, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Margaret, as a member of our book club, I feel privileged to have known you, and will miss you very much. I always enjoyed your deeply insightful comments and thought-provoking contributions to our discussions. I'll never forget the lively celebration of your 90th birthday at Triwood! You will live in my heart as an inspirational example of a gracious lady who knew how to make the most of her intellect and talents, and who generously shared them with others. May you rest in peace.
