Margarite West Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 16, 2018.
May 30, 1923 - March 14, 2018
On March 14, 2018, Margarite West joined her husband of 67 years, W. G. West, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Miller of El Campo, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Halling of El Campo in the life everlasting. She was 94. Margarite grew up in El Campo, Texas. She was accomplished in ballet and tap dancing, acrobatics, and was the drum major for the high school. When WWII broke out, she began working at Camp Hulen, in nearby Palacios, Texas, where she met Gaston West From Stephenville, Texas. They married in 1944, shortly before Gaston was shipped out to the Mariana Islands in the Pacific to prepare for the invasion of Japan. After the war, they returned to Texas, where Gaston graduated at the University of Texas at Austin. They moved to Del Rio where Gaston taught at San Felipe HS, an all-Hispanic school in the days of segregation. They stayed in touch with the students and were proud of their many successes in education, business and government.

The couple moved to El Campo, where they raised their three children. Margarite was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, wrote for the El Campo Leader News, and participated in community, social, school and church activities. They later moved to Corpus Christi, where they resided for 42 years. Margarite continued to be active in social, church and community activities with her husband. She was a devoted wife and mother and was the behind the scenes support for all of her family's activities. Margarite is survived by three children, son David West (Carol) of San Antonio; daughters Cherye West Tucker (Keith) of Austin and Donna West Smith (David) of Dallas; and six grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Michael Smith (Lindy), Marguerite West-Driga, Bond West, Libby West and Holt West.
The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff at Brookdale Oakwell Farms Memory Care and to Nora Sloan.

A service in celebration of the life of Margarite West will be held on Friday, March 16 at 5:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Funeral Home, 1101 McCullough in San Antonio. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Seaside Memorial Park, 4357 Ocean Drive, in Corpus Christi.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the educational institution or charity of your choice.

It was my great privilege to know Mr. and Mrs. West. They were wonderful, good people who represented the best of America's greatest generation. They will be greatly missed.

Much love sent to all of you as we remember a true lady. Great Aunt Margarite was an exemplary citizen and dedicated wife. Great Uncle Gaston was very kind and helpful when my father (Mike West and my grandfather Blake) passed away. Rest in peace and love.
