A sweet rose fell from heaven to earth on October 15, 1937; her fragrance filled the chambers of so many hearts and her beauty illuminated many lives. They named her Mary Magdalene Carr. She was the beloved eldest daughter of the late Deacon George L. Carr and Mother Eva Sowell Barber; A very protective big sister to her younger siblings, Eva Arnetta Carr Beatty and Clarence Louis Carr.
This beautiful rose flourished and matured academically through the corridors of East Arcadia High School in East Arcadia, NC. Mary was a licensed cosmetologist prior to becoming a paraprofessional with the SF Unified School District where her true passion as an educator flourished. She enjoyed working with children and making them into contributing members of society.
At a very early age, Mary began to develop her spiritual foundation at Wilson Chapel Baptist Church. After her matrimony to Johnnie W. Beatty on May 23, 1958, they moved to San Francisco, CA where she joined True Hope COGIC, Inc. Mary was a dedicated Christian and worked faithfully in her church. She was a strong believer and there was never a moment when she was not willing to sacrifice her time giving back to her community or helping others.
She leaves a legacy filled with grace and humility to her family and friends. She gave us so much love and wisdom to pass on to our children and to share with others. We will all remember the good times, the laughter, the good food, the look she gave us when we were doing things that we should not be doing. Even in the midst of strong discipline, she always provided a safe haven for those who had no place to go and needed to rest.
This precious soul was the quintessential woman who was an extraordinarily loving wife, mother, sister; the best grandmother to Kyree, and an adoring Godmother and loyal friend to many. On April 1, 2021, the rose faded and returned to her heavenly garden. Her fragrance will linger on in the cherished memories of her husband Johnnie W. Beatty; beloved daughter, Avie L. Beatty; the “apple of her eye” – her grandson, Kyree U. Beatty; her loving “Sutter”, Eva Arnetta Carr Beatty; amazing brother, Clarence Louis Carr; sister-in-law, Laura Porter; “adopted sister”, Mrs. Eva Mae McDonald (Aunt Vera) and a host of nieces, nephews, Godchildren and friends. The fragrance of her wisdom and educational wit was a rose that blossomed and affected the lives of everyone’s path she crossed. Mary loved reading her Bible, spending time with family, dancing and living her best life.

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Ms. Beatty. She was my older sister’s 5th grade teacher in the early 90s in SF, and I was in kindergarten at the time. I can remember Ms. Beatty coming to get me from my classroom when I would cry, and bringing me to my big sister’s class to be with her. We also went to the same church as Ms. Beatty, so it was an extra treat to see her on Sundays. I’m 34 now, but I can still remember how graceful, kind and loving she was to my family and I. Ms. Beatty, you will forever be missed. Kiss my mommy for me. Love always (Keyki & TT) The Culberson girls.

I am so sorry to hear about Mrs. Beatty I met her when I was 6 years old she was my teacher’s assistant and she taught me so many things, I remember we would always go over my times tables and even when I got to college I would talk to her and she would ask me what 4x7 I would be like really. Man I miss her so much. Rest high my sweet teacher
