Mary Battle Mackin, 85, of West Wyoming and formerly of Forty Fort, passed away Saturday at home.

She was born Jan. 29, 1928, in Dickson City. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Watso Battle. Mary graduated from Scranton Technical High School in 1946. She was a pioneer in the passenger airline industry, employed by Capital Airlines in Washington, D.C., for three years before marrying John Mackin in 1951. Mary was the mother of 12 children and celebrated 56 years of marriage. She always signed her cards and notes with "children are the melody of life." She pursued post-graduate studies at Oxford, England, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China, and Studio Art Centers International, Florence, Italy. Her quest for knowledge was endless.

Mary was employed for six years as assistant reference librarian at Misericordia University, before retiring in 1996. She was an avid artist, traveler, gardener and reader. Her love of travel and desire to understand other cultures took her to 17 countries over the years. She was always ready for an adventure. Mary won numerous awards for her artwork, quilts and pottery in various exhibits, including the Fine Arts Fiesta in Wilkes-Barre.

Preceding her in death was her husband, John Mackin, 2007; daughter, Christine Mackin Marshall; granddaughter, Amy M. Spaid; grandson, Michael John Mackin; son-in-law, Francis Rushton; son-in-law, Alan Hill; and brothers, John and Fred Battle.

She is survived by her children, Daniel Mackin and his wife, Kathie, West Wyoming; Jerome Mackin and his wife, Grace, Moon Twp., Pa.; Catherine Mackin, Exeter; Susan Walters and her husband, Richard, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Cynthia Mackin and her husband, Robert Miller, Flagstaff, Ariz.; David Mackin and his wife, Mary, Avoca; Maureen Spaid and her husband, Joseph, Beaufort, N.C.; Stephen Mackin, Minneapolis, Minn. My Mom and Dad, Robbie, and myself have been thinking of all of you lately, and have been wondering how you all are--so I went onto Google to find you all--how sad to see how this happened last week--Danny, Jerry, Cathy, Susan, Cynthia, we have the nicest memories of our childhoods with you and remember both of your parents with great fondness--you are in our prayers and thoughts. Gosh, your Mom sounds like she was a marvel in later life--I remember her as quite the quiet force when we kids. A great loss; I feel the pain all these years later. All best, Mary Jo Schnatter

The Entire Mackin Family,
I was so saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. I have such great memories of being at your house. It was like my second home. She always treated me like I was one of her own. Although we haven't kept in touch,I think of you all often. I am always telling stories to my kids about the haunted houses we use to build and your Mom pizza( that was the best)I know she will be missed by many and I was blessed to have known her. Miss you all and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Martha Dick Herring

To the entire Mackin family,
I was so saddened to see that your Mom has passed away. I remember all the great times I had at your house when I was young. It was like my second home. Your Mom always made me feel like I was part of the family. Although I haven't seen or talked to you all in a long time, I often think of you and reminisce telling stories to my kids about when we were kids. I know she will be missed by many and I was blessed to have known her. With love to you all. Martha Dick Herring

Your mom welcomed me into her home with a smile. A quick wit caring lady who always had a reply that would cause you to laugh. Thank you for giving me the time I had with your sweet mother. Thank you!!! I have treasured memories I won't forget.

I remember coming to visit with Grace & Jerry and Momma Mackin had made home made pizzas. I remember seeing the quilting that her and her girls were working on. She had done some paintings for my mother that her grandson now has. She was a remarkable woman and will live forever in our hearts and memories.

I recall so wonderfully a childhood memory where we would hear the news from time to time of our cousin Babe (23 years my senior) and her latest pregnancy which was always exciting but especially as the numbers went higher and higher even remarkable and amazing!! and was only one phase of her creative abundant life- I grew up thinking of her as my wonder woman cousin who could achieve just about anything she put her mind to....and it looks like she did and quite well. She was a wonderful source of inspiration and pride. I really enjoyed and will cherish our last visit to see "Babe" with my sister Melody ( deceased 3 years on June 10) and our cousin Lorraine (Kallay) about 5 or so years ago at her home in Forty Fort when her daughter and husband from AZ first relocated to live with her. ( I sincerely hope we can attend the services which falls on our 31st wedding anniversary and 21 years to the day I lost my mother, Olinda Dietz Watso, married to Babe's Uncle Bill (Watso). God bless all the Watso family and relatives!

To the Mackin Family. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all of you. I still have fond memories of the times we would hang out with all of you at Grandma & Grandpa Battle's house... Pitching horseshoes, exploring behind their house while the grownups sat and talked. Aunt Mary was a very interesting person and I did not know the extent of her travels and art. However, I still recall a nice watercolor painting that she had done which hung in the living room at Grandma and Grandpa Battle's house.

I recall Mary well from Misericordia and we worked together on some English compositions. I'd no idea, however, that she had gone on to continue her celebration of life in such grand style. Kudos to you, Mary. You will not be forgotten.
