The Rev. Melvin K. Johnson, 82, of Maxwell, passed away Jan. 25, 2010, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Springbrook, Wisc., to John E. and Myrtle Haynes Johnson. He grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from Olivet Nazarene College. Melvin entered the United States Army and served during World War II. He was stationed in Japan. After his discharge, he returned home where he met Irene Burks. They were married on Oct. 29, 1950, in Mankato, Kan. Melvin was ordained as a Nazarene Minister in 1974. The Reverend served in various churches in Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota and Kansas for 18 years. He retired in 1981. They moved to Maxwell in 2007.
The Reverend was a member of the Parkview Community Nazarene Church and also a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed the outdoors and teaching his grandchildren hunting and fishing, especially spitting on the hook.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Johnson, of Maxwell; two daughters, Cheryl (Rick) Millen of Duluth, Minn., and Alice (Roger) Yost, of Maxwell; son, Tim (Darla) Johnson, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his favorite walking partner, his dog, Sherman, of Maxwell; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Wesley (Beverly) Johnson, of Kalispell, Mont., Helmer (Betty) Johnson, of Superior, WI, and Arlen (Sandy) Johnson of Spooner, WI; sister, Marjorie Smith of Minong, WI; sister-in-law Lois Johnson, of Superior, Wisc.; and many other family members and friends.
The Reverend was preceded in death by a son, Mike Johnson, in 1995; his parents, John and Myrtle Johnson; brothers, Norman Johnson and Gilbert Johnson, Vernon (Peggy) Johnson; sisters, Marlene Johnson and Delores (Russ) Teitz.
Services will be Friday, Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Parkview Community Church of the Nazarene in North Platte with the Reverends Jack Atteberry, Roger Yost and Trent Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors graveside.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Parkview Church in North Platte. A memorial has been established in his name and online condolences can be made to www.adamsswanson.com. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Irene and family I'm sorry to hear about your lost but I would like you and family to know that he is in a better place now and that I know that you will all miss him but it does get better with time.
