Michael Becker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2011.
BECKER, Michael November 26, 1954 - January 16, 2011 Huge thanks to: Dr Allen Ausford and Hanna, Dr Kevin Larocque, the palliative home care staff, and the Cross Cancer Institute. Becker died from Leiomyosarcoma. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara; daughters, Ava Becker (Jos Zayas) and Sara Courtepatte (Jason); mother, Renate Bischof; sister Katrin Becker (Jim Parker); many nieces and nephews, in-laws and outlaws. He was predeceased by his father, Klaus Becker in 1971. Becker, born in Berlin, Germany, immigrated to Kitchener, ON by ship in 1962, later settling in Guelph, ON in 1964. He fell in love with playing music at age 10 when he learned the theme song to The Friendly Giant on the recorder. As a young adult he toured Ontario with his band, The Wizards, moving west to Alberta in his early 20s and making his home in the theatre community. There he became a sound technician at Theatre Calgary which led him to a career in sound design. For 30 years he designed sound and original music for various theatres, mainly Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects and The Citadel Theatre. His radio work included CBC Radio dramas in the 80s, and the theme for CBC Edmonton's Drive Home Show, among others. His work in film included documentaries (NFB, etc.), as well as "Acorn the Nature Nut" for which he received Socan's Children's Music Award on two occasions. He was also a member of the AF of M and IATSE Local 210. Becker also played guitar and bass with many local musicians and was proud of his 'toons, his black belt in Taekwondo, and his girls. He lived intensely and was passionate about learning new stuff. His contagious personality made a profound impact on everyone he met. A wrap party to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, January 31st at 7:30 p.m. in the Maclab at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Becker put all his faith in children's potential, so in lieu of flowers, give to your local children-either by spending time with them or through the organizations that support them. Barb, Ava and Sara,

The time has come- but the walrus didn't say it... my deepest sympathies go out to you with my warmest regards during these heavy days! How like life, eh? Through the years I have always appreciated knowing you and Micael- which will never change! Some may not remember the days when we first met Barb- but across those years I will not forget you all! I hope that when I next see you to celebrate what lives we have left and raise a toast to that wonderful maniac who brought so much care and joy to his creative work! Much love and tenderness, a tear and a torrent of tears to join with you in saddness!

Dear Barb,

I was made aware of Michael's declining health only in December; my heart goes out to you and the girls. He was a wonderful bright light of creativity, good humor and intelligence. My conversations with him were always a joy. Know that his gift of humanity has spread far and wide.

My thoughts are with you.

Dear Ava and family,

We are so shocked and saddened by Michael's passing, we knew him for far too short a time. He was a kind, beautiful soul who brought such light to the ddojang and to his productions and compositions. You are in our thoughts and we are so grateful and fortunate that Michael touched our lives.

Hi Barb,
I'm so very sorry to hear about Michael. He was always fun to work with and a true professional. I still have my tape of the Peter Pan music that he gave me after the show. Whenever I play it, it's takes me right back, as if no time has passed. He'll live on in his music.

Dear Barb and family,

I was so very sad to hear that Michael passed away and I am so sorry for your loss. Michael was and is an extremely bright light and he brought joy and laughter to so many. He always made me feel comfortable working on that first, A Christmas Carol which he truly made magical!

Peace to you and the family.

Dear Ava, I never met your dad--but I am sure he was and will be very proud of you. You are one of the most caring, bright and artistic souls I have ever met. His legacy and joy I am sure is reflected in you.

Barb I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Michael.

I got to know "Becker" in my role as a dispatcher at IA210, and quickly grew to respect and like him.

My sincere condolences to yourself and the children at the loss of a fine person, husband and dad.

To the Becker family,
I am very sorry for your loss. I knew Michael along time ago, and still have a recording of some of his music that he gave me when we worked in the theatre together. I remember him for his talent and excellent sense of humour. For me he will always remain a twenty something mischief maker, and it hardly seems possible that he is gone .My condolences.

We were so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. Although we haven't spent much time together in the last few years, we treasure all the memories that we have from years gone by. Barbara our thoughts are with you at this very difficult time.

We are so deeply saddened to read of the loss of Becker, a good friend of our son John and also to us. You have our most heartfelt sympathy over his loss. Becker was an amazingly talented individual in so many respects, as the notice showed. He had an extraordinary and prolific ability to create inventive and catchy music out of his head -- as far as we know, none of it was ever reduced to paper. His talents as a composer and arranger were never more obvious than in his collaboration with John on the "Acorn the Nature Nut" series and also the "Twits and Pishers" birdwatching series. His originality, playfulness and musical ingenuity were so essential to the success of both. We also had the pleasure on various occasions of hearing him play his guitar. His passing is a great loss to our family and John's and to his many friends, and so much moreso an immeasurable loss to you and your family.

Please accept our sincerest condolences.

Dear Barbara, Ava and Sara, please accept my warmest hug. Your sweet Michael was a treasure, a bright gem to so many.

It's been a long time since he and I last spent time together, but whenever we met, we laughed. In our deep past, we worked together at Theatre Calgary, shooting Solitaire and other projects that were enhanced by his wonderful artistry, and made more enjoyable with his delightful humour. I can't remember how it began, but he was "Deckipod" to me.

He made beautiful music, and beautiful babies. He was an honourable, calming and gentle man in my life. I love him, and I miss him. But like so many others, I'm so fortunate to have had that sweet man share a bit of his time on this planet with me.

I wish you, peace.

Dear Barb, Ava, and Sara,

So sorry to hear of Becker's passing. He was a great guy and a joy to work with. I have so many wonderful memories of music time in the studio, interspersed with visits with the family, going all the way back to Pine Place and the old house, not to mention all sorts of gigs together and crazy road trips. Becker was funny, smart, talented beyond belief, insightful and patient. I learned so much from him about music, television, the guitar, freelancing, scoring, and the overall art of life. We were all so fortunate to know such a remarkable man. I think of him often, and of you guys too. Much love and sympathy,

John

Dear Barb, Ava, Sara and Family,

I've only just heard of Mikes passing. Please accept my sincere condolences and love. In all these years whenever I was near, beside, behind or in any way around him (and more recently) thought of, or spoke with him on the phone, he always made me laugh, smile and most importantly feel loved. He stood beside me at my wedding .... and fell asleep with me on my living floor on Christmas eve. Today was a very sad first. I can not begin to imagine your loss ... with all my love and deepest sympathy I will be in Edmonton on the 31st

My deepest condolences on the loss of an amazingly witty, lively and great guy. I knew Becker through my brother John Acorn and we would all sometimes go out on a Wednesday afternoon and I'm telling you, I've ever laughed harder than when Becker was talking in a German accent - doing some send up of something and it was literally mind boggling that he could possibly be that smart and that funny. I mean you could not believe that he could be that funny. He was so super witty and quick and such a total performer in the best possible sense of the word.

I was really moved by the request to people to do something for kids in memory of Becker. What a completely right-headed thing to ask people to do. I think that's so moving and we are really taking it to heart and thinking of Becker with such fondness and such deep sadness at his passing. It is true that he touched the lives of everyone he met. He was a star. He really was.

To Michael's family.
I feel honored to have met Michael, and lucky to have had him and his Bees do their remarkable set of original music at the Blue Chair, just a short time ago. I was shocked to hear the news. I offer my condolences to Barb and Ava and the rest of his family.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the death of Michael. I had the privilege of working with Michael years ago, back in the day, at ATP. We always had a blast! He made me smile and laugh, and he was eager to share his knowledge and creativity. My heartfelt sympathies to Barb and your girls. And Michael- "Hghhemma, Hghhemma". (I never did know how to spell that). Peace.
