Norman Hetherington Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 7, 2010 to Nov. 6, 2011.
Norman Frederick Hetherington was an Australian cartoonist, best known as creator of the long-running Australian children's television show Mr Squiggle.

Norman Hetherington was 89.

He created Mr Squiggle for the ABC as a temporary fill-in in 1959, but his stretch on television was to last 40 years.

The show was based on the premise of children submitting their "squiggle" drawings that Mr Squiggle would complete with his pencil nose.

Hetherington would complete the squiggles working upside down.

After studying art at a technical college, Hetherington was first published in 1938 by The Bulletin, and joined the magazine full-time after wartime service.

In 1958 he married Margaret, who wrote the Mr Squiggle scripts. The program varied from five-minute segments to a 90-minute variety show over that time, and was last aired in 1999.

Hetherington is survived by Margaret and their two children

Thank You Mr & Mrs Hetherington for creating Mr Squiggle with his pencil nose & wonderful 'upside down drawings', grumpy old Mr Blackboard, Gus Snail & Bill Steam shovel - I loved that show for so many years and it'll always be a part of my special childhood memories. Perhaps the ABC could show is a 're-run' at an early adult viewing time - Just for 'old times sake' :)

I have " Mr squiggle to thank for teaching me the art of drawing. It was my favorite show as a child, and I remember being in awe of the humourous pictures that evolved from those squiggles. I'm now aware it was all very much team effort, but from the bottom of my heart I thank Mr squiggle for making my childhood that much happier.

Truly you don't know what you have lost until it's gone,I think a little piece of us all has died with the passing of this truly unique character.
The only thing more wonderful than the delight in a childs eyes is the ability of those childrens entertainers such as Mr.Hetherington to relate to the audience on their level if they were 2 or 42.
Thankyou Mr.Squiggle your stay on Earth was far too short,God speed you on your trip home."Goodbye is not forever Miss Jane!".

I wept openly when I heard the news. Just 2 days earlier I looked at my two squiggles that you sent me last year for my 50th and remembered that they were the highlight of my year and that I will cherish them and my memories of you forever. Love you forever Gina(nsw)

When I was about 12 I was taken to Hyde Park Sydney by my mother for a flower show and part of the kids entertainment was the live Mr Squiggle show. It was on a few times through the day and due to my interest in puppetry I attended every performance. The producer noticed my attendance at every performance and to my surprise asked me if I would like to come and meet Mr Hetherington. I went backstage and met Norman , Bill Steamshovel, Blackboad and Mr Sqiggle. What a thrill, what an experience and what a genius Norman Hehetington was. I will never forget it, or them. To the muse of all cartoonists, who get stuck for an idea, I know that he was and has always been my muse..and what a gentle soul he was. For me, my children and grandchildren, his squiggles were the ultimate in imagination made flesh.

When i think of my childhood, much of the time I think of Mr. Squiggle and the many works of art he created from a little line and squiggle randomly placed on the page.
My grandfather worked at a theatre when I was younger and one year mr. squiggle visited and I met him. It was a wonderful experience in which I had my very own Squiggle from him done which I still have to this day.
In the words of Mr. Squiggle Happy moonbeams Norman and may you rest in peace.

Vale & Farewell Uncle Norman.
I remember you when, as a child, my grandparents took me to your puppet shows in Sydney, long before "Mr. Squiggle". I loved the dragon who puffed talcum powder!
My father, your cousin, also says "farewell". You brought so much pleasure to us all - rest in peace.

Wow the memories of a wonderful TV show for the little ones that was good honest fun. My eledest daughter who is now 23 loved it when she was a toddler and we had to sing to her the Mr Squiggle theme song often at bed-time.
It is so sad that all the NICE kids TV shows like this are gone now - Humphrey, Fat Cat, Romper Room etc and I remember them fondly. RIP Norman you are a true legend.

You were and still are an inspiration to many people who watched you on TV. Thank you Mr Squiggle and Thank Mr Hetherington.
Watching over us in our skies, while travelling in Mr Rocket destained to coninue drawing in our night skies, joining up all the dots we see, so young children can continue to look up and use their imagination to see the drawings that you leave behind. Thank you

Thank you Norman for helping to give many generations of Australians a fun start to their lives! You incorporated art in a unique way by keeping us 'youngsters' guessing all the time as to what you were about to draw.
We still say' hurry up' in blackboard's voice here at home for a laugh!
Rest in peace!
