I am most sad to have learned of Professor Handlin's passing. He has been much on my mind lately as I rush to get my finally completed manuscript to the publisher. It is a manuscript that was born at a small conference in which I challenged an interpretation of his. Although we had no institutional connection beyond this brief moment well into his retirement, his response was to encourage and support its being written. In this one small act, he taught me a great deal about what it meant to be a teacher and a scholar. The book was too long in coming--he did say to me once, one needed to talk less about writing and do more of it. I deeply regret he could not have seen still another small part of his legacy.

Tonight I am thinking of Prof Handlin with gratitude for his great, positive influence on the education of a high school student in Connecticut in the early 1960's. It was history with heart, humility and humanity. Condolences to those privileged to know him personally. His light will still shine, I'm sure. - D Hansen
