Peter J. Adams

Peter J. Adams died November 9, 2018 while out for a walk in Bend, Oregon. Peter was born in Hawkhurst, Kent, England.
Peter graduated from the University of Oregon with a B. S. in mathematics and physics in 1963. During his undergraduate years, he spent summers at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory working on Project Sherwood, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, and two years at the National Nuclear Rocket Development Center, working on Project Rover. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. After graduating with a Ph. D in physics from the University of Oregon in 1973, Peter held research and teaching positions at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, The University of British Columbia, University of Puget Sound, Washington State University, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. During these years, Peter published extensively in astrophysics, general relativity, and cosmology.
Peter Joined Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1984 and worked in X-Division until his retirement in 2012. During his career in X-Division, Peter worked on a major laboratory program, both as a team member, mentor, and as a point of contact. Peter also acted as a Scientific Editor for the Defense Research Review.
After retiring, Peter continued collaboration with X-Division staff and contributing to the TITANS program. He is a coauthor of a TITANS textbook on physics for laboratory applications. Throughout his academic and laboratory career, Peter maintained a broad interest in physics and mentoring, and was a resource to many of his colleagues. For many years, Peter was an active mentor with MathCounts. Peter is survived by his wife Shari Madden Adams, and his sons Bryce and Myles Adams.
