Quentin JACKS Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jun. 10 to Jun. 12, 2011.

JACKS, Dr. Quentin Douglas February 16th 1917 - June 6th 2011Early Monday morning Quentin took his leave from this world. He had enjoyed more than 94 years on this earth and his many friends and beloved family miss him greatly. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Quentin wanted to be a doctor from the time he was a young child. His desire to help others stayed with him his entire life and to do so he used his education and resources to the fullest. As a specialist in Ear, Nose and Throat medicine and a respected surgeon, he restored hearing and health to countless patients. As a volunteer in many capacities over the years, he provided additional help to others. As a dedicated Christian, he devoted himself to his God and his church. As a Naval doctor at sea, he served during World War II. As a father and a husband, he loved and cherished his wife Marion and his five sons, Terence, Ronald, Bradley, Craig, and Scott and his grand-children, Carl, Jesse, Dave, Erica, Holly, Greer, Tazmine, and Marisa and he was proud of his two great-grandsons, Ryze and Jaden. As a brother, he loved and helped care for his sister-in-law, Helen Melvin. As a brother, he loved his sister, Yvonne, his brothers, Donald and Milton, and was a beloved uncle to their children. As a father-in-law, he loved and guided the mothers of his grand-children and the wives and companions of his sons, Patty-Anne, Susan, Christine, Maggie, Suzanne, Anita, Bernadette, Diane, Diane and Carol. As a companion, he respected and cared deeply for his long-time friend, Shirley Simms. His contributions to this world are too great to be enumerated here, nor did he wish them to be, but suffice it to say that his parting is a loss beyond words and he will be remembered by those he left behind for the rest of their days. He will be greeted on the other side by those who predeceased him: his parents, Mary Chase and Douglas Stonewall Jacks, his wife, Marion, her sister, Helen, his brothers, Don and Milt and many of his friends. A Funeral Service will be held on June 29th at 3pm at Shaughnessy Heights United Church 1550 West 33rd Avenue, Vancouver. Celebration of Life to follow at 5pm at The Arbutus Club 2001 Nanton Avenue, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made ""In Remembrance of Quentin Jacks"" to the Pacific Otolaryngology Foundation, 2153 West 51st Avenue Vancouver, BC V6P 1E4.

I had the pleasure of meeting Quentin as one of his many "morning friends" at the club. He was a great connector. I will always be appreciative of Quentin's genuine concern and support to me as I successfully negotiated my own health crisis. We also shared an interest and love of the Bahamas through the commonality of Bahamian partners living in Vancouver. Thank you Quentin for enriching my life and those of everyone you met.

There is an image in my library which I laminated on a mount and although I was not the one who captured it, my intent was purposeful. It is an image of a very mature elephant drinking from a water source, looking directly at the camera. The tusks are half as long as its trunk. The trunk is wrinkled but evidently has a strength which is foremost in the image.
I had spied this image while seeking inspiration on the web one day. I printed it in black and white and once laminated, inscribed "Q, for all of us". I meant to give this to Quentin on his next visit to the islands. He had been here so often I had lost count, with his beloved wife Marion and later with God’s true blessing to me, Shirley.
The inscription was not thought out. It was reactionary. There was never a time in the 31 years since I have known "Q" that he never had an insight, comparison, inspiration or humor to highlight an occasion, remedy a blemish, be it personal or physical and many times the former was represented by only communication of his eyes or the width of his grin.
Wisdom, long life and memory were the attributes he engendered and the hopes I felt he had for “all of us”.
Travel on my friend, thank you for sharing your life with all of us…….

Our sincerest sympathy to all on the loss of Quentin. We knew him many years ago while we still lived in Pemberton. He and Marion were wondeful warm hosts and we so enjoyed the times spent with them. He was an excellent physician and helped Arthur with many difficult cases.

My condolences to the entire family, he will be missed. Recall sitting around for Sunday Dinners at Grampa Don and Grandma Dotties Farm House in Okotoks with Uncle Quent. Some of the conversations were absolutely epic. Don and Quent, the king brothers of one-liners and great stories.

All the best,

I knew Quentin through his many trips to the Bahamas and his visits with the Simms Family.
He had a long and productive life as a person and a doctor. I enjoyed knowing him and wish to send my sympathy to his family and friends.

We only had the opportunity to meet Quentin once, when we were treated to the hospitality of the Jacks Family on Thanksgiving a few years ago - what a treat it was! He was loved and will be missed by many.

Quentin was a kind, thoughtful, warm hearted man that was a wonderful father-in-law and a grandfather to be admired. We were blessed to have him in our lives & he will be missed.
