I became his senior registrar in 1970. What an inspiration he was.

As a new and lowly member of the Microbiology Department at Barts, Journal Club in Professor Shooter's office was quite an experience. I moved to New Zealand and many years elapsed, yet I was delighted to find I was remembered with affection by Professor Shooter and we corresponded every Christmas. Not to be overlooked, his significant contribution to the study of hospital acquired infection. A special man and an excellent scientist.

Prof Shooter gave me my place at Barts for which I have always been grateful. I have always thought it was because I was from Gloucestershire. He was a great mentor to many students and newly qualified docs.

I remember being very much in awe of Professor Shooter when I was a medical student - and amazed that he should appear at breakfast at Charterhouse Square on occasion to talk to the medical students and find out what they were up to and what they were thinking - he was always involved.

I will always be grateful to Professor Shooter for interviewing me to enter Barts in 1975 through clearing, after my 2 years spent in Nigeria doing VSO. I was a mature student he assumed I wanted to come so made it very easy for me. I have now retired after 33 years as a GP so I think he made the right decision

As a young doctor I spent 6 months in five of of the Barts Path Labs (1963-5)in preparation for part 1 of the MCPath exams. Professor Shooter was a kind man, who taught me a lot (eg, when signing all the reports at the end of the day, make sure you concentrate and check them properly). He invited me to his home for an evening meal with his family on one occasion, and I felt very honoured. My subsequent career included a great deal of microbiology work, and I am grateful that he started me off so well.

I recall Reggie with great pleasure, I was one of his registrars at Barts and he was a generous mentor. Highly intelligent but easy to talk to. A dry sense of humour and always prepared to listen, reflect and give good advice. A characteristic Bart's man.
As a student in a practical class I asked him how some micro organism could move if it had no flagellum. He moved away pondering. Some time later he caught up with me and surprised my group who had not heard the original question. "Snakes don't have flagellae", and strode off again.
A great guy!

Prof. Shooter interviewed me and gave me a place at Barts through UCCA clearing. I went on to be a consultant microbiologist and so have a lot to thank him for both in terms of becoming a Doctor and choosing a fascinating speciality.

Reggie taught me as a medical student, advised on clinical microbiological problems as a junior doctor, and was Dean when I was interviewed for a Consultant post at Barts. As such he was on the Appointment Committee. I recall him firmly objecting to an inappropriate question asked of me by one of the Committee, so protecting the nervous but successful candidate! In all these roles he was a wise and kindly gentle man. A wonderful full and long life, which will leave a great gap for his devoted family, to whom I send my sympathy. With great regret I am unable to attend the funeral.

I was a student at Barts before Prof Shooter became Dean but I well recall his superb teaching skills and his sympathetic manner with patients which stood me in good stead later in my career. My sympathies to his family.

Prof Shooter was on the interview panel when I applied to Barts, and was Dean when I was President of the Students Union. He was a terrific Dean, and a true mentor with a great sense of perspective. "A certain baseline intelligence is needed to be a doctor...there's quite a lot to learn, but dont think yourselves too clever...being kind, having a good memory and worrying about patients is much more important".
Sadly this is paraphrased, but I have remembered the sentiment and him for all my career. My sincere condolences to the family

Very sad. A super man. I was his research bacteriology registrar for a year and learnt a huge amount. Over the last decade he contacted me and told me where he was. It was a delight to be in contact again and exchange the odd letter and Christmas card. I will always be most grateful to him for setting me on my feet in medicine. My condolences and very best wishes to the family. Professor Parveen Kumaar
