Ralph Westover Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 5, 2007.
Former longtime Alaskan Ralph F. Westover, 91, died Nov. 30, 2007, at his home in La Conner, Wash., of natural causes. His children were with him at his death.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. His ashes will be buried next to his wife, Beatrice, in Angelus Memorial Park in Anchorage and in the Cook Islands.
Ralph was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Seattle, and raised there. He attended the University of Washington, majoring in civil engineering. He moved to Alaska in 1939 to build airports with the Civil Aeronautic Authority, which is today the FAA. He married Beatrice Walsh of Bellingham, Wash., in November 1941. He brought her to Anchorage, where they settled and raised their family of seven children.
During his career with the FAA, Ralph went from engineering to budgeting to emergency preparedness and finally retired as the regional representative to the Department of Transportation. He also was sent to the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va.
Upon retirement, he and Beatrice toured Europe for a year in the "Orange Crate," a VW Vanagon they bought in Germany. Later they purchased a home in La Conner, Wash., and became snowbirds, living in Mesa, Ariz., during the winter except for the month of January, which was spent in the Cook Islands, and summers in La Conner.
"Ralph had many interests," his family wrote. "Among his greatest was being with family and friends. He was a caring and compassionate man who always conducted his life with strength, character and integrity. He shared his infectious humor with all. His obvious love of people attracted friends from all walks of life. He never met a stranger. He traveled extensively, eventually finding the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. He fell in love with their beauty and their people. He was treated as a respected elder, earning the title of 'Papa Ralph'."
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Beatrice, in 2003, and their son, Mark, in 1969.
He is survived by his daughters, Penny May of Anchorage, Julie Latuska of Anchorage and Mary Ann Ballew of Marysville, Wash.; and sons, Ralph Westover III of Anchorage and La Conner, Brian of Milpitas, Calif., and Gregg of La Conner. He had 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Condolences may be send to 72 Hoh Place, La Conner, WA 98257.

I loved Ralph very much. He was a loving man, and very kind. He accepted you for who you are, and always had a kind word to say. He reminded me very much of my grandpa Jones. He was very proud of his family. He will be missed very much! I will sure miss those scrambled eggs!

Wow. It has taken me several days to figure out the kind and wonderful things i have to say about my grandfathers passing. I would need a book of pages to say all the wonderful memories and good things he was about. John Wayne has always reminded me of him.We will all miss him and life needs more people like he was. He will be forever missed by my family and I. What a full robust important life. His life will always be an example of how i will guide myself to be. The best grandparents imaginable. Period. So much respect there will always be a hole missing in my heart forever. What a life he had! He lived it to the fullest and even in death is a role model for me. He used to love buying my family steaks when he passed through Oregon at the local steak house. Even the waitresses loved him genuinely. He will be missed by all. Love you grandpa.

Ralph was my Granfather, and a true inspiration for me when I joined the aviation industry in 1989. As a little girl growing up in Anchorage, he taught me how to look up in the sky and tell the difference between an DC-10, 747 and a 727 as they flew over us. I am very proud of him and all his accoplishments. He will be greatly missed.

I wish to offer my condolences to Ralph's family. He was what I considered a true Alaskan pioneer. I will remember fondly the times we talked about the "old" Alaska and its remote places that we had both been. He was one of a kind!

Ralph was my grandfather, and the more I got to know him, the more I loved and respected him. In the past few years we grew very close especially during this time of the year. Erika, my wife, will miss visiting and spending the warm afternoons chatting with him. We will miss putting up his Christmas decorations and listening to stories of Christmas past. My children love and miss their Great Grandpa very much. He will always be a special part of our family.

Much can be said for my father. My memories of him are solidly etched forever in my heart and mind. Never before was there a man so dedicated to his family than he. He will be missed.
