Harlen was a treasure. We first worked together at Holden Village in 1973. I was the cook and he was an hilarious addition to the legion of volunteers. Harlen was a gregarious school teacher--but, like so many who were 'infected' with the Holden Village virus, he became a Pastor. And what a Pastor! For so many years, as Carol and I were running and cooking at the Harbor View in Pepin, Wi., Harlen and Georgia were ministering to English Lutheran in Ellsworth, Wi. There is so much more to tell: Griefs beyond measure and Joys and Love beyond all telling.

I was so very blessed to work with Harlen at English Lutheran as I reentered ministry in the USA after 23 years living in Asia, working among Filipinos and Chinese in Hong Kong. It was kind of like a second internship with an excellent supervisor, helping me readjust to the American church - at its best! Harlen was exemplary as a pastor, both in his nature and his operations, and a natural teacher/mentor. I was honored to take the #2 support position as he and the congregation were still passing through the grief of losing Georgia. Though I never had the chance to know her, it was clear to me how much Harlen loved her and missed her. And then he trusted and encouraged me to support the congregation through his retirement and the transition to a new pastor. I was honored by that trust. I will always be thankful for him! I look forward to him singing in the choirs in heaven!

After Georgia died I helped Harlem With his flower gardens. We planted some stargazer lilies that he really liked.

Harlen“s first parish was in Birchwood WI. I was in high school at the time and my family, along with many other parishioners, drove to Mankato for his ordination. There are so many memories of his time with us - rollerskating with our youth group (yes, he was very good at it), singing, his dating time with Georgia, their beautiful wedding, having their first baby (Rachel), the many baptisms he performed, including the double baptism of my niece and my cousin. Those two babies looked so tiny as he held them in each arm (he was very tall) and both of them were very content to be there. He was missed greatly when he left our parish and he will be missed now. My heart goes out to the family.

He is my cousin! Harlen played golf with me for two seasons and was a very dear friend of mine besides being my cousin!

I met Harlen when we were both voting members in the last ALC gathering, when the merger that resulted in the ELCA occurred. We both then served as charter members of the Synod Council of the NW Synod of Wisconsin. Later, when I served briefly as Bridge Pastor at English Lutheran, Harlen called on me one day, and we had a very pleasant visit. Harlen was always mannerly, pleasant, a good thinker, and pastor. His company was always welcome.

Dear Rachel, Mike, Joel, Hanne, Andrew, Georgia, Alex and Maggie, Your dad, Bob's brother and my only and favorite brother in law was a most gentle, loving and deeply devoted husband, dad and Grandpa. Harlen was devoted to his faith but even more devoted to his family. He also was a great teller of corny jokes. He is and will always be deeply missed. He was a true bow tie wearing gentleman and is greatly loved. Bob and Jan.

I Terry Gaard remember the first time I met Rev Harlen Menk. Stan Shefveland and I were on Church council when we contacted Rev Harlen to come for a tour of English Luthern Church. Rev Harlen was very interested and accepted our call to become our Pastor.
My son Benjamin Gaard was the first child Rev Harlen baptised in our Parish. Also, my grandson Landyn Gaard was the last child Rev Harlen baptised before his retirement.
I always admired how efficient and very well prepared he was for every sermon he gave. He always kept his church office very well organized and neat. Rev Harlen was missed immensely by our Congregation after his retirement.
Our family sends our sincere sympathy to family and friends.
