I remember on my grandparents' (Lucas) 50th anniversary Richard sent greetings to North Judson, Indiana from Nigeria. I was proud that one of my cousins was in the newly-formed Peace Corp, a cousin I knew from Thanksgivings spent with my family and Bob and Norma's family. Out of the 50 first cousins I had I could personally name 15 and Richard was one of them.

Rich was devoted to his family, proud of Ann, Becky and Andy. He was one of the hardest working librarians at the State Library/Library of Michigan. His knowledge of Michigan documents was unequaled throughout Michigan. He was a good friend, and I will miss him. Anne Diamond

My condolences to the family. Rich was a remarkable librarian and part of the remarkable staff when I was lucky enough to work at the Library of Michigan. I will never forget how helpful and generous he was sharing his time and knowledge with a newcomer. He was a true gentleman.

It was my pleasure and privilege for many years to work with Rich Lucas at the Library of Michigan. In an understated manner he was a brilliant innovator and a highly skilled locator of information. His calm personality and reserved manner charmed all who worked with him. He brought dignity and integrity to our workplace.

I have so many fond memories of Lucas family from when I was a child growing up in the Forest Road School area. I remember the Halloween Parties they would have at their house. Beautiful memories. Richard, Raymond and I graduated from school together in 1960. Always like that family and had good times together.

TO THOSE I LOVED and THOSE WHO LOVED ME
When I am gone release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do you must not tie yourself to me with tears, be happy that we have had so many years. I gave you my love, you can only guess how much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it's time I travel alone. So, grieve a while if grieve you must---then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for awhile that we must part so bless the
memories in your heart. I won't be far away for life goes on--so, if you need me call and I will come. Though you can not see or touch me---I'll be near and if you listen with your heart you will hear all my love around you soft and clear. And then when you must come this way alone---I'll greet you with a smile and---Welcome home. Let his memories warm your hearts forever.
My Deepest Sympathy to all of you.
Forever, Barb (Rich) DePue

Frequently during my employment with the Department of State I had occasion to use the reference services of librarian Rich Lucas. He was one of the best in the business. In one memorable instance, I asked Rich where I should look in the stacks for a particular monograph and without checking the card catalog or any other source he told me the call number of the volume based solely on his knowledge of cataloging procedures. His performance as an information provider made him a role model for all government employees. It is one of Rich's legacies that he leaves behind a good example of how a master craftsman can be of service to the public.
