Robert Carroll Reed 1934 - 2009 Morrison Funeral Directors Robert Carroll Reed, 75, formerly of Stratford, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2009 in Bakersfield, California. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 11, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Stone, pastor of the church officiating. Private burial will be in Stratford Cemetery. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Carroll was born March 5, 1934 in Stratford, Texas to William Glenn and Mildred Ione Reed. He was one of four children. In 1952 he graduated from Stratford High School and in 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Gamble. He served his country in the US Army and then went to college at Texas Tech University. He received a B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. He then pursued additional graduate studies in math from the University of New Mexico. After college he worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory for the United States Energy Department from 1959 to 1962. He primarily worked on the IBM computer. It was a joint effort pioneering the way for computer evolution over the next two decades. Carroll served in many technical and management capacities in the corporate world. He worked for several companies including Computer Sciences Corporation, Citicorp and Bank of America. While in the banking industry he was one of the key contributors to the research and development of the modern ATM machine and the credit card machine at gasoline stations. He left the TTI/Citicorp to become one of the original founders of Teradata Corporation, heading up research and development. Carroll was a very private person and his family always came first in his life. He instilled core values in his children and grandchildren which were passed on to him by his parents. For the last 48 years he enjoyed life with family and friends while living in California. He had been a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes for over 40 years before retiring to Bakersfield. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Schoenhals. Survivors include; his wife of 55 years, Cynthia; son, Larry Reed; daughter, Cari Burnett and husband, Ian; brothers, Jack Reed and wife, Gwen of Spearman and Bill Reed and wife, Margaret of Stratford; grandchildren, Krystal and Stephanie Burnett, Marine Private First Class Robert Thomas Reed and Michael Reed; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to the American Heart Association, PO Box 15186, Austin, TX 78761. The family will be at 1006 N. Maple in Stratford.

I worked with Carroll at CSC so, so many years ago. Carroll was for all those years the consumate professional and gentleman. That, along with his quiet demeanor gained the deserved respect that everyone had for him.
