Ledyard - Robert "Bob" Schmidt, 76, of Ledyard, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

Born in Ballston Spa, N.Y., he was the son of the late Carl and Eva (Anibal) Schmidt. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Technical College in Troy, N.Y.

Bob married Patricia Simone of Chatham, Mass., on Dec. 27, 1959, at St. Helen's Church in Schenectady, N.Y., and they were married for 52 years.

Bob was a Radiological Control Operations senior supervisor for Electric Boat. He was responsible for the implementation of radiation and contamination controls to safely ensure the completion of various nuclear projects. Bob worked on nuclear power plants, submarines and various sites during his 40-year career.

He will be remembered for his great ability to listen and his dry sense of humor. Bob was a man of his own mind. He was a true lover of the great outdoors and an avid gardener. Bob was a lifetime member of the Groton Sportsmen's Club where he was on the club's Skeet Shooting Team.

Bob had a great love for his family and will be deeply missed.

Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Peter Schmidt of Ledyard; daughter, Penny Boomer and her husband, Norman, of Chaplin; son, Paul Schmidt and his wife, Elaine, of Norwood, Pa.; five grandchildren, Amy, John, Justin, Payton and Penn; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Robbins of Galway, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Schmidt of Rye, N.H.; eight nieces and seven nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Oscar, Carl and Donald Schmidt; and a sister, Helen Robbins.

Friends are invited to visit the family from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, immediately followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. Burial will be private.

I learned alot from Bob in his visits to the KSO work site in New York. I really enjoyed our conversations and his insight to not only the work we did but to leadership and life in general. I wish I had the oppportunity to spend more time with him. He was a good mentor and a great person.

Bob taught me a lot while he was here in the shipyard, mostly by example. He may not have been here these last years but his "influence" still guides the few of us oldtimers still here in Radcon. I'll always be proud to say that I knew Bob.

Please accept my condolences for your loss. I remember Bob well from my time at EB. We knew if he said it was safe to work an area, it was. We all relied on Bob and his people. May God's Grace be upn the family.

I am so thankful I had a chance to visit last year and that my boys had a chance to meet you. I will always think of Mr. Schmidt with his big joyful smile and I will cherish my memories of the times our families spent together in Ledyard. Adrianne
