Roberta Otte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2024.
Roberta Anita Otte, age 80, of St. Paul, MN passed peacefully in her beautiful home surrounded by her children on August 1, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband Charles Elmer Otte, parents Robert and Phyllis Mathis, and in-laws Elmer and Phyllis Otte. She is survived by children Kimberly (Kevin), Kelly, Kristy, Kevin (Ellie), her grandchildren Kaitlyn, Kane, and Hank, her sisters Linda and Sandra, and close cousins John, Herbert, and Sue.

Growing up on the west side bluff of St. Paul and living on the same block her entire life as part of the Mathis/Haas/Anderson clan, she became a bit of a local celebrity with many cherished neighborhood friends. She attended schools of St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's and remained a parishioner at St. Matthew's throughout her life. She co-founded the business Cardinal Corner in West St. Paul, and later spent many years working for the American Red Cross in St. Paul. In retirement, she balanced time relaxing at the family cabin, traveling widely in the US and Canada, and enjoying her backyard with family, neighbors, and pets.

She was well known for her humor, kindness, adventurous spirit, and sound advice. She was a very proud mother and grandmother. Roberta loved entertaining her family in her home for birthdays and holidays. Some of her favorite activities were riding in the pontoon, gardening in her backyard, visiting state and national parks, birdwatching, and cuddling her dog.

Roberta was prepared for passing due to interstitial lung disease. Her time in hospice was comfortable, safe, and gave her time to visit with those she loved. She had time to watch the fireflies dance in her yard, hear her grandson's laughter, and crack jokes with her family. Her children cannot express enough their gratitude to hospice caregivers and all of those in the medical field who supported Roberta's health.

In lieu of flowers, her memory can be honored through donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American Lung Association, or a local animal shelter/rescue.

Service is at the Church St. Matthew at 510 Hall Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55107 on Tuesday, August 20th, 2024

Visitation is one hour before the service at St. Matthew's at 10 AM.

Reception is immediately following the service in the church social hall.

Roberta made me feel welcomed into her family instantly. I loved hearing her stories about being a mom and a wife. She liked to share not too serious advice with her great sense of humor. I learned that she cheats aimlessly at scrabble, I also learned that she actually has a very good vocabulary.
I loved watching her with our son and spoiling him with love and sweets. She is definitely missed but I have a lot of lovely memories to keep her alive in my heart.

Mom, you were a wonderful mother. Thank you for always being there for me when i needed to talk or just have a good laugh. You were and always will be in my heart. I love you mom!

Mom, during one of our conversations when you were in hospice, you talked about this song that you hadn´t heard in years. We listened to it together-I´m not sure how I held it together. What a beautiful message. Love you Mom.

"When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
For your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone"

Such a amazing part of my high school years. Spent many years in the Otte Family home, Friday night videos being a major. Saturday cleaning so Kim could go out. The laugh, smile and dimples of beautiful Twink I will always remember. I love and hurt for you all.

Something I will always remember about Roberta was that she was a kind loving person and we had many great Christmas parties at her place for years.
