Ruth Colby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2023.
Ruth Colby nee Cohen, 69.

Beloved wife of Donald M. DeFrank. Loving mother of David (Becky Riffkin) Chodak. Dear sister of Judy (Steven) Dolins, sister-in-law of Sue DeFrank and Joan Beeler. Loving aunt of Maddie Dolins and 1St Lieutenant US NAVY Dr. Michael (Meredith) Beeler and Gabi Kastel.

Under Ruth's leadership, Silver Cross opened Will County's first and only Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in 2022 - the 24-bed Amy, Matthew & Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; introduced an open-heart surgery program in 2019, that is now one of the busiest in the State of Illinois; and championed the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross in 2012, which is among the top three robotic surgery programs in the Midwest.

Ruth also forged partnerships with several leading Chicago health systems, bringing world-class care to the southwest suburbs so residents could receive the most advanced care close to home. These include the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services; University of Chicago Medicine for cancer services and neurosciences; Rush University Medical Center for lung surgery; and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital for pediatric and neonatal services. In addition, she partnered with US HealthVest to build the 110-bed Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital on the Silver Cross Campus, which opened in early 2019.

Ruth assumed the duties of President and Chief Executive Officer on Oct. 1, 2017, after serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for twelve years. Throughout her tenure, Ruth worked closely with the hospital Board of Directors to set the organization's vision and strategic direction. Her exceptional business acumen and visionary leadership led to transformational growth for Silver Cross Hospital over the years - expanding from a 289-bed hospital when the hospital opened its New Lenox campus in 2012 to 348 beds today.

During that time, the hospital's medical staff also increased dramatically - from 350 medical staff members to more than 1,200 - attracted by the hospital's commitment to providing exceptional care while investing in the latest medical technologies. She also expanded the hospital's footprint through successful ventures in surgery, imaging services and medical group expansions. Silver Cross now has more than a dozen locations throughout its service area in Will County.

Ruth was also very active outside of the hospital - both in community organizations and healthcare associations. She served as Chair-Elect of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA) and was slated to become Chair in 2024. Ruth also had recently been appointed to the American Hospital Association's Regional Planning Board for Region 5.

Ruth also served as a Past President of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, an American Hospital Association group and received the national award for Individual Personal Achievement in 2009. A passionate advocate for the community, Ruth also gave generously of her time and talents to numerous community boards. She was Chair of the Will County Center for Economic Development, on the board of the Will County Children's Advocacy Center, a member of the United Way of Will County Pillars Society, the Joliet Rotary Club and the Economic Club of Chicago.

What's more, Ruth's passion for achieving health equity and helping the less advantaged in the hospital's service area, particularly on the east side of Joliet, led to the creation of the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission (HCC) in 2008. Under Ruth's guidance, this community-based organization has been focused on creating a stronger, healthier future by providing support for education, workforce development training, and enrichment activities for youth, to improve the quality of life for the communities we serve. Since its founding, the HCC has awarded over $3 million in educational scholarships, workforce development, and grants to numerous east-side Joliet residents and organizations.

In 2021, Ruth received the Athena Award from the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was named by Crain's Chicago Business a Notable Woman in Healthcare and Notable Woman Executive over age 50 in 2019. In 2023, she was named New Lenox Citizen of the Year by the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce and a Notable Healthcare Executive by Crain's Chicago Business. And this week, Ruth was to receive the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts.

I worked with Ruth many years ago at R.R. Donnelley & Sons. She was a mentor to me and she was an excellent friend and co-worker. Our client was L.L. Bean and we traveled together up to Maine for a meeting and clam bake. When she left Donnelley, I helped her carry out all her belongings to her car. We shed tears as we said goodbyes. Last time I saw her. R.I.P. dear Ruth . . love you!

I first met Ruth when I started working at Silver Cross. She made me feel very comfortable. She always came by our department to check & see if we needed anything. Being as busy as she was, she always made time for everyone. She was Superwoman in my eyes. Always had a smile on her face. I admired her so much. She is truly missed. She touched so many lives. I know she is a beautiful Angel.

I never met Ruth but it was because of her the care I received at Silver Cross
Whoever that takes her place will have big shoes to try on
I was shocked to hear about her death
May God grant her eternal life

I was fortunate to have met Ruth at our ladies book club in Chicago. It was a monthly gathering that included women of all different backgrounds and was much more than a dinner and brief discussion on a book. Our dinners tried to include a theme that went along with book. Should the story take place in Italy... we had Italian food and wines and so on. The conversations were all encompassing and shared not only the book with frank discussions but what was going on in our lives. Many friendships were born in this group and Ruth was always interesting, supportive, funny, energetic, giving, insightful and more! I give my sincerest condolences to her family, her work family and friends she has made and will continue to honor her in her memory. RIP Ruth Colby much love and prayers.

I used to do Pilates in Chicago with Ruth...she was a lovely spirit.

We visited her home in Sawyer...it was beautiful.

At Halloween...she dressed up in a scuba outfit with goggles and fins...funniest costume ever.

So sorry for your loss.

I met Ruth during my orientation last month and she was one of the nicest ladies I've ever met. She was a part of my departments EVS week, my first week at Silver Cross and she asked me how I liked working at S.C.H. She will be dearly missed by many. Condolences to her family and fellow colleagues who knew her.

I first met Ruth at U of C/Weiss Hospital. David, you were a baby and adorable. I was amazed at how Ruth juggled motherhood with a significant job at Weiss......and from there she just went upward and outward. She never seemed to be tired or distracted--could give people her full attention and consideration. I saw her a few years ago in Michigan and she was as beautiful and focused as ever. So sorry to hear of her death. All my best wishes to her family.

Ruth was a good friend from high school. I remember her as always energetic and full of optimism. I reconnected with her years later in 3 Oaks and we saw each other at art gallery openings in Chicago and 3 Oaks. She never lost the energy and optimism. I will miss her; she is gone way too soon.

Condolences to Ruth's family. May her memory be for a beloved blessing. Ruth was an inspirational force. Her personality, energy, professionalism and compassionate sense of caring for all she met and her community at large cannot be measured other than, perhaps, by the countless who have been touched by her grace. May the void we all feel be filled by our commitment to carry on her legacy.
