Sally Hand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2017.
Sally Hand

Age: 57 • Burlington

Sally Hand, 57 years of age, beloved daughter of Samuel and Harriet Hand, passed away on the morning of July 8, 2017 after an acute respiratory infection and complications from her kidney transplant in October 2014. She was born on July 15, 1959 in Kingston, NY, but came to Vermont with her parents as an infant in 1961. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1977, Sally went on to major in history at the University of Vermont, receiving her BA degree in 1981, before earning her masters in Library Science in 1983 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sally loved history, politics, current events, spending time with the "Holly Lane kids", as a volunteer patient advocate at UVMMC and cheering on her beloved Carolina Tar Heels during any of their numerous championship games, particularly if they happened to be playing against Duke University.

After earning her MSLS from UNC, she moved to New York where she worked as a tax librarian for the audit, tax and consulting firm of Deloitte & Touche while remaining active as a UVM alum. In addition to being a corporate librarian, Sally also volunteered for NY Cares and was a Team Lead for Read To Me, an award-winning children's literacy project in the borough of Queens. Her love of reading and her love of children were evident in her volunteer services, and she continued to volunteer in the children's branch of the Burlington Public Library until the time of her death.

After moving from NY, Sally also worked as a law librarian in various firms in Washington, DC, where she was active in the Betsy-Tacy Society and retired in 2009 from the international law firm Holland & Knight where she worked as Assistant Librarian, Mid-Atlantic Region. While at Holland & Knight in 2008 she received the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award from the Washington Lawyer's Committee for her work with the Washington office's Opening Doors for Children volunteer program as an advocate for child literacy.

Following her time in D.C. and after a brief stint in North Carolina, she returned to Burlington, where having been diagnosed with renal failure she started her dialysis regime and became involved with the Transplant Donor Network "TDN" community. This group of friends who were all touched by transplantation, became her support during the 2+ years of dialysis and after she received her new kidney. Sally remained active in Donate Life Vermont and would travel to high schools with Jim Carter. Here Jim would share the need for drivers to "buckle up" and Sally would welcome these soon to be and new drivers, to check the "donate" box when getting their license, and to go to donatelifevt.org to officially register as an organ donor.

Sally's other passion was her faith and her family at the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. Sally was intrigued by the history of the Jewish community in Burlington, served as the synagogue librarian and was an enthusiastic supporter of folk art, including the rare mural at the Chai Adam synagogue that is now part of Congregation Ohavi Zedek. She also enjoyed memories of her time at YWCA Camp Hochelaga, a girls' summer camp on Lake Champlain where she made lifelong friends.

Sally is survived by her sisters, Ilana Hand and Marci Hand Raab, her brother-in-law David Raab and their children Nathan and Elizabeth Raab; also many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Organ Donation Special Fund. Please make checks payable to Vermont Department of Health and on memo line, write "Organ Donation Special Fund". Mail to VT Dept. of Health, C/O Shayla Livingston, 108 Cherry Street, Burlington, VT 05401. A non-monetary gift of life would thrill Sally most of all. You can become an organ donor in her memory, by entering your information on the donatelifevt.org website. Simply checking "organ donor" on your license is not sufficient.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11 at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, 188 N. Prospect St, Burlington with interment to follow in Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery, 319 Patchen Rd. S. Burlington. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors.

Today is a sparkling beautiful New England day. We live on Cape Cod right near the water and during our morning walk to the beach I thought of our days on Lake Champlain and the Holly Lane kids and Sally was one of our fabulous Holly Lane kids. I was really glad I got to see and talk with Sally years ago. Great memories. Sally was a kind, devoted family and friend to many. Xoxo

It is amazing to me how many folks you touched. When I came to your dad's services you jumped out of the car and hugged me. We were part of the Holly lane kids. I love you and I love your family

Our sincere condolences. Sally will be missed.
We met our sophomore year at UVM and she attended our wedding in 1981.
Sally talked about coming to MN to visit the Betsy-Tacy society.
To celebrate Sally on her birthday, my husband and I went to Mankato today, July 15th. We visited all the Betsy-Tacy spots in town. For you, Sally.

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Sally. She was a true Gentlewoman. I "met" Sally through the Maud Hart Lovelace Listserve; we corresponded privately and were able to meet in NYC once. It would not surprise anyone to know we got along as if we'd known each other for a lifetime. She was a true friend and blessing to me at a time I needed one. I will never forget her. May Sally's name be a blessing.

Dear IIana and Marci, my deepest condolences to you and your family. I had the pleasure of meeting Sally on the porch of Camp Hochelaga for the first time at a reunion many years ago. She was so full of stories about camp and I could see how much Hochelaga meant to her. I also got to know Sally through Donate Life VT with my friend Eileen who was a kidney donor. I remember Sally's waiting to receive a donation, she was thrilled to have the chance. It made my heart sing for her, that she would have a few more years. I will miss her and please know her Hochelaga Spirit will never die. RIP Sally.

Sally and I were in elementary school, junior high, and Girl Scouts together. (Sally always sold the most cookies each year!) We reconnected on facebook, and had lunch together three times when I visited Burlington in recent years. (We both enjoyed the fact that her new apartment was in what had been our school gym.) Her warm welcome always reminded me of the song we used to sing together in Girl Scouts all those decades ago: "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." I'll miss her. My deepest condolences to Sally's family and friends.

I met Sally just a few years ago when I moved into the same building as her. I am a librarian and never knew until today that she was also a librarian. After I met her I somehow discovered that she was a friend of the wife of a high school and college friend of mine, although they had never met in person they were friends through there shared love a literature. Sally was a very kind person, she loved to see my little dog Chloe. I am sharing a photo of her that I took when she stopped by my office and we had a display of material on organ donation.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Hand family. I first met Sally in the summer of 1977 when we both worked in the Special Collections Department at the UVM Library. We became good friends, but graduation led to graduate schools in different states. Sally always stayed in touch with a timely card or an upbeat phone call. I especially remember her very thoughtful call right after the mass shooting on the NIU campus where I teach. Over the past 40 years, Sally was a true and wonderful friend that will be greatly missed.

Sally, I'll miss seeing your big smile but will keep it in my heart ❤

Shocked and sorry to hear this sad news! I enjoyed Sally's virtual company for many years on the Maud list, and then off and on in person after she moved to D.C. I am sorry I did not know all that she was going through in the past few years. Baruch Dayan Ha-Emet!

I am honored to have grown up with Sally and be one of the Holly Lane kids. We were so lucky to grow up in our Holly Lane block paradise. Kick ball, beach fun, Hide and Seek. Wow we were blessed. I saw Sally at Sams funeral. In typical Sally fashion, she hugged me and invited me to come back to the house for a visit.I loved Sam and Harriet. They were amazing parents and great friends to our family. I have a beautiful photo of Harriet and my mom at my wedding which I cherish. Love to Ilana, Marcy and family.

We stayed in touch and I visited her in Vermont shortly before her father's unexpected death. We stayed in touch through phone calls and Facebook. I will miss her.

It was a real privilege to be Sally's friend over the four plus years we have lived in Vermont. Karen and I are so appreciative of the myriad contributions made by Sally to the work of the social action and caring committees at Ohavi Zedek. Sally was always selflessly helping others. She will be greatly missed!

Sally you shared your love of books with your family. I remember you sending a collection of the Betsy Tacy Books to me and your cousin Mark Gibbons for our daughter Erica. Recently you again shared that love by sending me the start of a "Grandmother's Library". Erica blessed us with a grandson and you blessed us with the start of a library of baby books to stay at our home to read to Mikey. Your unique gift was so wonderful, like you. I will think of you every time I read one of those stories to my grandson. May your memory be for blessing.
