Selma Wall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2015.
Selma Wall, our Mom, passed away quietly on Oct 4, 2015. She was born on January 28, 1934 in Saskatchewan and her 3 lb. 6 oz. body was kept alive in an open door oven. Her family moved to Yarrow within the year which is where she spent her childhood years.  She lost her mother at the age of 7, changing life for the whole family. She recalls two events most vividly – working hard and having great fun with her sisters in Sarah's bedroom. Mom attended Bethel Bible School for 2 years. These were some of her best years. She enjoyed memorizing hundreds of Bible verses and meeting her lifelong best friends. After a series of jobs in Vancouver and Chilliwack, she eventually was trained as a dental hygienist – a job she thoroughly enjoyed. When, at 18, her parents moved to Chilliwack Central, she joined and faithfully attended Eden Mennonite until her passing.  That is where she met our dad. Her flair for fashion developed while working in Vancouver, as her sisters before her, caused Dad to notice her, particularly her copper-strapped shoes. Mom and Dad married on April, 2, 1956 and moved into a renovated chicken coop. They farmed together on Rose Road for almost 40 years. In their first house, they had two children, Marjorie and Audrey. After settling into their second house, Les was born. Nine years later their fourth child, John, was born initiating a remodel of their home, but she still left the bright red shag carpet in the living and dining rooms. Mom always wanted to be the mother she didn't have. She was that and so much more.  She was the aunt the cousins wanted to visit.  She was the hostess for many family and friend gatherings.  She is known for making delicious meals, beautiful table settings which always included a fresh flower arrangement, delicate petite point pictures, fashionable clothing and keeping a lovely home as well as being a perfect partner to our father. They just went together like peanut butter and jelly, pie and ice cream, corn and cows, bread and butter, "rullkuchen und erbooz" . . . . you get the idea.
Before retiring they annually took their children on summer vacations to places as near as Victoria and the Okanagan or as far away as California and Florida. In retirement, Mom and Dad traveled to Europe, South America, across Canada and the US. Each Fall, they drove their motorhome through the States to visit 3 of her 4 children.  From Spring to Fall, they liked to get in a good fishing trip.
We remember her faith in God, her church service, her daily devotions, her quiet wisdom, her Godly grace, her efficient 'doing' nature and so much more. She was that good and faithful servant all the days of her life. We love her and will miss her dearly. She is predeceased by her husband, Peter Wall, and two sisters, Sarah Kuliesa and Annie Dirks. She is survived by her 4 children, Marjorie and Preston Hofer, Audrey and Gregg Waltner, Leslie and Jan Wall, and John and Karin Wall, and 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. As well as her sisters, Mary Dyck, Linda Hayton, and Betty Voss.

I don't have current contact information for you, my cousins, so I was pleased to see this opportunity to pass along our sincere sympathy and love. Regretfully, we were unable to attend the funeral service. Aunt Selma's gift of hospitality is something that stands out in our memory. It was always a pleasure to visit in their home. You will miss her dearly - may your memories bring you comfort.

I just heard today about Selma's passing, so I want to add my condolences to the family, especially to Peter and Linda. I remember Selma as a quiet but very friendly person, and she was always dressed elegantly. She will be missed! May God's comfort and peace be with you all.
