Stanley Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 9, 2007.
Stanley A. Jones, "Mister Lake Powell," succumbed to prostate
cancer on September 3 in Phoenix. Boater, hiker, photographer, writer and publisher, Stan was an authority on Arizona and Utah history. He wrote numerous books and articles, and for oner thirty years published a well-known map of Lake Powell. Stan was born on October 2, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka as a champion springboard diver. After moving to Tucson in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a World War II instructor of aquatic survival, and as Commander of an American Legion Post at Twentynine Palms, California. Following the war, Stan wrote for several newspapers (including the Salt Lake Tribune) before joining Walt Disney Productions in Burbank, California. He was publicist for Fess Parker, ("Davy Crockett") and for the Mickey Mouse Club. Later, as Director of Radio, TV and Theater-Screen Advertising, he produced "trailers" for Disney motion pictures. Returning to Tucson, he became Associate Director of the University of Arizona News Bureau, and founded Sun Country Publications with his wife Alice. Stan moved to Page in 1967 to publicize Lake Powell. With Alice and June Sanderson, he founded the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum. He was president of the Page Library Board and a board member of the International Natural Arch and Bridge Society, In 2002 Stan was inducted into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame. He is survived by a sister, Geraldine Jones Carney, of Evanston, Illinois; a son, Steven Dana Jones, of San Jose, California; daughters Jeanine Jones and Sherryl Ann Jones Wagoner of Lake Havasu, California; step-sons: Frank R. Slater of Page, and Ed Slater of Fresno, California; plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stan is preceded in death by his brother Ralph, his wife Alice and her son, Robert G. Slater. A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm on Tuesday, September 18, at the Page Community United Methodist Church, 291 S. Lake Powell Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum in Page.

Words cannot express how much Stan meant to all of us here in Page and at the Powell Museum. Not only was he a founder of the Museum, but he was a great friend and mentor as well. He was always a gentleman and always willing to lend a hand when needed. He and Alice were such a wonderful couple. I want to always think of them walking hand in hand in a beautiful garden once again. Our prayers are for all of Stan and Alice's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I first met Stan when I interviewed him for The Lake Powell Chronicle. He was much more than guidebook writer. He was a gentleman, thoughtful, keenly perceptive, intelligent. He had an interest in writing for writing's sake.

Our deepest sympathy to the Jones family. Stan and Alice were friends of whom we have fond memories. Our trips together always included wonderful stories and appreciation of nature.
