Thomas Akers

Thomas R. "Tom" Akers Thomas R. "Tom" Akers, 77, of Bristol, Va., left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 9, 2013, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Fleming, Ky., and was the son of the late Clarence and Ruby Burklow Akers. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bobbie Ruth Stapleton, and Joyce Fitch. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a retired representative of Keebler Company. Tom was an active member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church for 62 years having served as a deacon and in various other capacities. Survivors include his wife, Betty Duty Akers; two daughters, Tommie L. Long and husband, Roger of Mills River, N.C., and Janet Harman and husband, Mike of Edmonds, Wash.; one sister, Carol Akers of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, David "Larry" Akers and wife, Betty of Lake Wales, Fla.; two grandchildren, Justin Long of Palm Bay, Fla. and Shayla Long of Mills River, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. It was Tom's request not to have a funeral service; however, the family will receive friends at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, 900 Euclid Ave, Bristol, VA 24201.
