Thomas Kline, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2022.
Thomas Joseph Kline, Jr. passed away the morning of Monday, July 25th, 2022 in Tyler, Texas. He successfully battled numerous illnesses during the last 18 years of his life. His body was willed to the UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Tommy, as he was affectionately known by his friends was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on February 6th, 1950. His parents were Thomas Joseph Kline, Sr. and Doris Prideaux Kline. He was raised in the Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas. A rebellious childhood quickly changed course when he entered Jesuit College Prep in Dallas. A standout athlete, Tommy particularly excelled on the gridiron. He earned the nickname, "Rabbit", by his high school teammates for his quick footwork and his defensive instincts. He was recognized nationally as a Catholic High School All-American and was eventually inducted into the Jesuit Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. After graduation, Tommy briefly attended the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship. Rabbit quickly realized a conversion to the defensive backfield was not for him and hopped over to Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.

Tommy was heavily involved in in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at Texas Tech and graduated with a degree in Psychology. He enjoyed a successful life-long career in Commercial Real Estate beginning with a job working for his uncle, JL Prideaux, in Dallas. While at Texas Tech, Tommy met the love of his life, Sharon English Kline, his wife of almost 50 years.

A shared love of travel brought Tommy and Sharon on many adventures together worldwide, from Morocco to Peru, and even a few years in retirement living in the highlands of Boquete, Panama. Their spirit of adventure sparked a magical relationship evident to anyone who encountered their presence.

An involved and proud father to sons Clayton and Kevin, Tommy loved coaching his boys in youth sports, particularly baseball, where one of his colorful Blazers or Suburbans could be heard blaring John Fogerty's "Centerfield" as a pre-game ritual. He also was a board member and tournament director for Dallas Inter Soccer Club.

Tommy was an avid hunter and passionate golfer. He never had an unsuccessful hunt or round because it was always about the camaraderie of enjoying shared experiences with his friends. A crack shot and a true outdoorsman, he loved the sport of hunting dove, quail, duck and deer but also respected the harvest and his connection to nature. He picked up golf later in life and immersed himself in it. He was able to play the "bucket list" courses such as Bandon Dunes in Oregon and St. Andrews in Scotland. Despite his best efforts, the PGA never came calling.

Tommy received a special blessing later in life. He connected with his biological family, revealed by their shared DNA. His birth parents were Charles Francis Vienhage and Joan Dunlop Vienhage of Springfield, Missouri. He made a strong bond with his younger biological sisters and brother and their extended families during the last few years of his life.

Quick to share a smile, a handshake or a hug, he was a true friend to everyone he met. He made instant bonds with people from all walks of life. He lived the "Man for Others" motto learned at Jesuit College Prep throughout his life.

Tommy is survived by wife Sharon English Kline, his son Clayton (wife Allison, son, Clayton); his son Kevin (wife Jessica); his nephew Chris Conine (wife Kelly, daughters Chyler and Katelyn); Sister-in-law Norma English Harris (husband Jeff, daughter Lindsay, son Austin) and numerous cousins and loved ones. He is predeceased by his sister, Carol Conine and his parents, Thomas Joseph Kline, Sr. and Doris Prideaux Kline.

Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas https://www.ctkdallas.org/ located at 8017 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX 75225. There will be a Rosary Vigil on Friday, August 12th, 2022 at 6:00 PM and a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the general scholarship fund at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas https://www.jesuitdallas.org/make-a-gift, St. Mary Magdalene New Church Fund https://catholicflint.org/building-fund or the charity of your choice.

Tom and I were fraternity brothers at TT, good friends in the time afterwards. I lost touch w him as we were transferred to California. He always brought a smile to the party. A genuine and gifted friend. My best to Sharon and his family. Steve

But you have been in my heart and on my mind and I know Tommy is that hurting but that doesn´t make it any easier. Heart aches for you. Tommy was a leader, a legend, and a loyal friend -- our classmate, brother, and friend to all. The nicest guy you ever met -- and he never stopped fighting the good fight! May our Heavenly Father ease your grief and leave only the cherished memories of his loving ways. And may the Angels lead him into Paradise.

If you were with Tommy, you'd best be ready to go full throttle. On one golf outing at Tennyson East, the group behind kept hitting their drive into us. After 3 holes of this, Tommy said enough, and proceeded to "Happy Gilmore" their ball into the woods. They drove up and asked if we'd seen their ball. Tommy pointed to the forest and said: Yeah, its over there. Classic Tommy. A more fun guy there never was!

Sharon I am so sorry for your loss of Tommy! Your husband Tommy & my husband Peter both shared the devastating diagnosis of Esophageal Cancer in 2013! We all met in Houston Texas after choosing MD Anderson for treatment & after their surgery Peter & Tommy´s rooms were right next
to each other on Floor #7! Peter & I would walk up & down those long halls of that 7th floor with you &
Tommy walking right with us as they held their poles of what seemed like a million tubes & bottles swinging back & forth as they walked! They had both just survived a horrific surgery but somehow were able to form a bond of friendship & support as they recuperated! Because Tommy & Peter were true "Mens men" I felt they could have these man to man conversations that really helped them because they were going through the same thing together! I also felt an instant bond of friendship with you too Sharon & as caregivers we could talk together because we were going through this too even though our journey was different as their wives! Peter was also born in 1950 like Tommy which I didn´t realize until I read it here in his obituary! Same age! When the guys were discharged I appreciated your follow up phone calls & messages on Facebook more than you know Sharon! I truly believe God put us together in this difficult journey! Finally I want to share my sincere gratitude to Tommy for making an effort
to go back to that 7th floor to visit Peter when he became sick again & was sent back to MD Andersen for an attempt to manage his new cancer that had returned! Tommy was back at MDA for a routine check up & Peter was in fighting for his life! Tommy found out Peter was there & he called me to see if it would be okay for him to go visit Peter! Just another kind & amazing gesture on Tommy´s behalf! Peter said when Tommy walked in his room he looked so good! He looked like a movie star! Peter told me It meant the world to him to see Tommy again! Then Tommy told Peter to fight like hell! After all we still have to play that golf round we talked about!
Sharon there is no doubt in my mind I had Peter
a little longer because of Tommy´s visit that day!!! I also have no doubt in my mind that Tommy & Peter are finally having that long over due golf round in Heaven together with Jesus & his angels as their caddies! Rest In Peace sweet Tommy! Love you Sharon! Please please stay in touch with me! Love you & praying for you! Claire

The short time I knew Tommy was a blessing in my life. Through Gokf at Oakhurst Golf Course and a few other random course we played I found a heart felt friendship with Tommy. He was a good man, he was a the golf partner everyone wanted always saying it could be worse, or we got this on the back 9. I will never forget Tommy. I am great full that Chad Essex introduced me to this man. He will always be remembered as the friend that never gave up no matter how bad the golf course treated us.

Sharon, when visiting you n Tommy in Panama, I recall one story y´all were telling about a church member. Don´t recall the details, but at the end, Tommy adds, I just don´t think he likes me. Sharon, we both looked at each other and simultaneously said, "who doesn´t like Tommy Kline"!
