Timothy Bown Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 14, 2010.

BOWN, Timothy Robert December 13th, 1977 - December 8th, 2010 Timothy Robert Bown passed away unexpectedly on the morning of Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at the age of 32 years. Tim was one of the newest members of the Canadian Border Services Agency, having received his badge on November 29th, 2010. For 14 years before that he was the head instructor of Safeguard Martial Arts where he taught over 2000 adults and children Karate and self defense and guided 68 students to achieve their black belts. As a fourth degree black belt himself he was a highly accomplished martial artist who had earned the respect of many of his peers around the world. Tim's main passions in life, beyond his family, his martial arts and self defence, were music and learning, but it was never limited to just those things, as he had an extraordinary passion for everything he did in life. He taught himself to play the guitar, a talent he put to use even before his daughter was born by singing and playing to her regularly. He also loved listening to music of all genres, but he especially enjoyed sharing his childhood favourite, Raffi, with his young daughter. He would have described himself as shy, but most who knew him were awed by his confidence and grace and his ability to make everyone around him feel good about themselves. Tim was a dedicated and loving father to Madelyn Christy Bown, and the devoted, caring and amazing soulmate and husband of Rachelle Monique Bown. He was also the beloved and cherished son of Lynne Hemeon Rene as well as his father, Robert Bown and stepfather, Phil Rene, and grandson to Marie Bown and Beatrice Rene and son in law to Monique Terwogt. He was also the big brother, best friend and mentor to Christy Delaney, and big brother to Stephanie and Justine Bown as well as loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. In addition to his close family he will be deeply missed by many friends, especially a close group who considered themselves the "Band of Brothers" and his large extended family, with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to share in a celebration of Tim's life on Saturday, December 18th at 2pm at The Pacific Inn (1160 King George Highway, Surrey). If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Madelyn Bown Education Fund at Coast Capital Savings or to the BC Childrens Hospital.

We are so very sad to hear of Sensei Tim's passing. He was the most amazing, motivating, charismatic person we have ever met. He greatly inspired our son, Jordan each and every time he saw him in and out of class. He will surely be missed by all who knew him. Chad & Monica

We were deeply saddened to hear the news of Tim's passing. We had the pleasure and privilege of training with him at CBK in Victoria and were at his grading when he achieved his black belt. We always knew he was passionate about his martial arts and with his discipline would carry it on to whatever path he chose in life. He will be missed and it has been an honour to have trained with and known him. Dave and Adrienne Walker

Lynne,
It is so hard to imagine the sorrow that comes with the passing of a child. After reading the guest book it seems that he had a wonderful impact on all the people he encountered and we hope you take some comfort in the kind of son you raised. Our thoughts are with you. Paul and Kathy

I knew Tim from Fast Defense. He was an exceptional, compassionate friend who touched my life with his spirit, energy, and enthusiasm. I will never forget him and I feel his presence in my life even stronger since his passing. It is a mystery to me why someone so healthy, vibrant, loving and full of life would be taken from us. I can only imagine what purposes he has to fulfill elsewhere or the reason God would call him home. Whatever the case may be I feel that he is fulfilling this purpose above and beyond to 110% as he did with everything else in this life. I close with a tear in my eye and tears of joy in my heart for having met this great soul's acquaintance.

With deepest Love,

Gone but never, ever forgotten... your spirit lives on through your family and friends, and the many other lives you touched. Tim, in the short time I knew you in Rigaud, I quickly came to feel like I'd known you for a lot longer. You had a way of putting people at ease, with your friendly smile, your sharp humor, and your genuine kindness. You frequently spoke very highly of your family; the beautiful wife and daughter at home who were so proud of you. You were always encouraging and positive, and just had a natural zest for life. I am very lucky I had the opportunity to meet you and get to know you, and you will be greatly missed. I know you will continue to impress, wherever you are. Until we meet again, my friend.

For Bob & Christy and Family,

Although the years that have past have been many since we last met, Tim was an individual I looked up to as a youngster. We also shared the same first name back then, which to me as a child was sacred. I always had fun when Tim was around in fact our last encounter was on the paintball field. My deepest sorrow to the Bown family, may his memory stay forever in our hearts.

I will always remember Tim as a gracious and humble person and an exceptional self-defense instructor who always wore the best t-shirts. He always made me laugh. It was so obvious he loved his wife, daughter and family for he always talked about them. BBQ will never be the same without him for there's now a tremendous void that cannot be filled by anyone else. He's made such a positive impact on so many people's lives and he'll be missed and remembered for it. May peace find it's way to his family and friends.

We recognized Sempai Tim's picture in the paper this morning. We are so very sorry to hear of the loss of your precious son. Both our daughter (sadly passed away three years ago) and our son were taught Karate from Sempai Tim in Langley at Canada's Best Karate about thirteen years ago. Our son was only five at the time and loved Tim, earning up to his orange belt. Tim was kind, caring, energetic and the kids loved him. How wonderful to hear that he married and has a daughter now. Our deepest sympathies to you all. Peace and comfort to your whole family.
