Vangel Zissi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2023.
Zissi, Vangel R. DMD, age 87, of Winchester, MA, passed away on December 24th, 2023.

Dr. Zissi was born in 1936 in Manchester, NH, to Dimitri Zissi and Anastasia (Theodor) Zissi. His three siblings predeceased him: Liria Petrides, George Zissi, and Valentina Zissi.

He attended Central High School in Manchester and received a BS in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire in 1958, where he was a member of the Men's Varsity Lacrosse team and a brother in the Theta Chi fraternity.

He graduated from Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 1962. Following his graduation, he became a member of the Navy Dental Program, where he was assigned to active duty at the Marine Corps Depot in San Diego, CA. He then served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He became Senior Dental Officer, First Battalion, 25th Marine Reserve unit, 4th Marine Division (1965-67), completing his obligation with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon his return from active duty, he returned to the Tufts School of Dental Medicine, where he received his certificate in Endodontics as one of the first 2 graduates of the program in 1967. He then joined the faculty, helped build the program, and mentored many of its graduates.

He was a principal in a private group practice known as Limited to Endodontics, where he stayed until his retirement at the age of 80. He was extremely proud of his practice and loved going to work every day.

He received the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Annual Alumni Association Achievement Award in 2007, the Distinguished Service Award in 2008, and the Provost Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service. In May of 2013, he was awarded Emeritus status. He has held the roles of director and president of the Dental Alumni Association and is also an emeritus member of the Tufts University Alumni Association. He was awarded the Faculty Sesquicentennial Award and, this past fall was awarded the prestigious Dean's Medal. He also served as a member of the President's Council of Tufts University. His service was not limited to Tufts; he was a past president, master fellow, and deputy registrar emeritus of the International College of Dentists.

He was active in his community, coaching all of his children's different sports teams over the years. He was an avid Boston Sports fan, enjoyed skiing and the mountains, and was a huge supporter and mentor of the Tufts University Men's Lacrosse program.

Dr. Zissi is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara (Reardon), his two sons, Jonathan of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, his son Christopher and his wife Michelle of Washington DC, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Eulalia's Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester, MA 01890, on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at 11:30 AM. Please go directly to the church. The interment will be private.

Van was a mentor in my path to becoming a dentist and endodontist. He was my pre-clin instructor in the endo course and clinical instructor in UG and PG at TUSDM. Van inspired his mentees to teach and stay connected to Tufts and seeing him weekly through the years of teaching always brought a smile to my face and a lesson to be learned. I will miss him on many levels. Thank you Van for all your teachings, encouragement and friendship. You will be missed dearly.

Having met Van at UNH in 1954, he became one of my oldest and best friends for all these years. He never devoted time talking about himself, but only about others. He was a selfless and lovely man. ~ Jim Yakovakis

Van lived a life that combined a love of Tufts University and your dental practice of Limited to Endodontics while balancing an active family life. That is no small feat, but you did it effortlessly. You like the other partners were a driving force behind being a hard working professional and doing what was in the patient's best interest always. You taught many to give back to their profession in many ways because it was the right thing to do. You never forgot where you came from. To this day, patients who visit the practice ask for you.
The military had a saying that applies to your dedication to all aspects of your life..... mission well done. You will be dearly missed!!

Van was my pre-clin Endo instructor, helped connect me with my first Ortho practice in his hometown of Manchester, NH back in the 80's, my ICD sponsor, and mentor throughout my career. We kept in touch over the years and I was fortunate to serve on the Tufts Alumni board for 14 years and sit next to him for most of the monthly Monday night dinner meetings. I had lunch with him a little over a year ago and we talked about life and so many other things. I feel so grateful that he was in my life as a teacher, mentor, and most of all friend.

Van mentored me as an undergrad, guided me through my Navy commissioning upon graduation, found my private practice for me upon discharge and simultaneously set us up with a realtor to find our home, placed my associate (Matt Fantasia) with me when needed, sponsored me in the ICD, attended my kids´ weddings with Barbara, a dear friend that will be part of me and my family in perpetuity.

Dr. Zissy was such a wonderful and dear man. Super supportive to his Alumni Relations work study students and then later in life he was a cheerleader encouraging us in our practices. He stressed the importance of living a balanced life.
Truly a gem.

Dr. Zissi was truly a remarkable and caring person who will be missed dearly. What I will miss the most is our conversations about growing up in an Albanian family (Korca, Albania), the traditional food (especially lakror me kungull e me presh) and his passion to improve his Albanian language (we always laughed at the many Albanian expressions). I will miss him passing by the dispensary window at Tufts with his white coat, his confident walk, his big smile and the many delicious cookies and cakes Barbara would have him bring to us. He would always start his greeting with "Po ku je me?".

Thank you for the loving and warm memories and for your big heart!

Love,
Nikoleta

There are few in this world who are as genuine, personable and interested in other's well being as Dr. Zissi exemplified. New to Tufts dental school faculty in recent years, I was welcomed as if I had known Dr. Zissi since childhood. He deserved highest respect as a professional, colleague and friend. He was loved but all and will be missed greatly. Sincere condolences to his family.

Van´s passion for dentistry and sports-especially men´s lacrosse and basketball was an inspiration! I loved every experience with Van, whether it was teaching at Tufts Dental, working on Continuing Education programs, Alumni events, and practicing at Limited to Endo. Funny, enthusiastic, my role model! Kathy OLoughlin
