WALTER J. JR.
Age 74 of Meadville, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at home after an extended illness. Born in Meadville, December 6, 1928, he was the son of Walter J. Greenleaf Sr. and Martha Jehn Greenleaf. He married Elizabeth Meehan December 10, 1955. He retired in December 2000 as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Greenleaf Corporation in Saegertown, PA. A graduate of Allegheny College in 1950, he worked for McCrosky Tool and Sheffield Gage Company before joining the Pittsburgh-based Walter J. Greenleaf Company in 1952. In 1962, he joined Greenleaf Corporation and returned to Meadville in 1968. He served as President of Greenleaf Corporation until 1994. Active in the Meadville community, he was the 1986 recipient of the Dr. Harry C. Winslow Award, served as a Director and President of Spencer Hospital overseeing its merger with City Hospital to form Meadville Medical Center. Other boards served on included Meadville Housing Corporation, Boy Scouts of America, Liberty Electronics, Pennbank, Integra Bank, National City Bank, Gunnebo of Sweden and trustee of Allegheny College. Among his many awards was winner of the 1999 Small Business Person of the year for the state of Pennsylvania and recipient of the Allegheny College Gold Citation in 2000. He was a member of the Meadville Literary Union, Essayists Club, Crawford County Historical Society, Masonic Lodge #408, Meadville Country Club, Iroquois Club, Duquesne Club, Young President's Organization and World President's Organization. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth H. Greenleaf; four sons, Dr. Walter J. Greenleaf & his wife Dr. Cecille O'Brien Greenleaf of Portola Valley, CA, James M. Greenleaf & his wife Nancy Newton Greenleaf of Meadville, Gregory G. Greenleaf & his wife Rebecca Shelby Greenleaf of Pittsburgh, and William P. Greenleaf & his wife Debra Howard Greenleaf of Howard Falls, PA; seven grandchildren, James M. Greenleaf Jr., Nancy Elizabeth Greenleaf, William R. Greenleaf & Mary Catherine Greenleaf of Meadville, Walter James Greenleaf & Garrison Couper Greenleaf of Portola Valley, CA, and Ethan Howard Greenleaf of Howard Falls, PA; his sister, I. Marie Hamilton & her husband Paul M. Hamilton of Meadville. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Arthur. Service will be at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch Street, Meadville, on Saturday, November 15, 2003, at 11:30am with Rev. David Findlay, Pastor of St. Brigid Church, and Rev. Timothy Solomon, Pastor of Emmanuel United Church of Christ. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Meadville. Friends may call at the BYHAM-MILLER-MIZNER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, on Thursday, November 13, from 7-9pm, and on Friday, November 14, from 2-4 & 7-9pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Allegheny College, 520 N.
