William McGann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31, 2021.
William E. "Bill" McGann, 90, of Pearland, TX, formerly of Davenport, FL and Windsor, CT, loving husband of 68 years to Constance J. (Nichols) McGann, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. He was born on February 28, 1930, in Hartford, CT, son to the late James F. and Beatrice E. (Duffy) McGann.

Bill grew up in Windsor, attended local schools and was a graduate of the former John Fitch High School, Class of 1948. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the US Navy receiving his Boot Camp training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. Following completion of his boot camp training, he attended the Naval Training Center Electronics School where he graduated and earned the rank of ET3. He was then assigned to further training in Newport, RI, to then be assigned to the USS James C. Owens, a 2,500-ton class destroyer, for it's re-commissioning from the mothball fleet in Charleston, SC. Upon the re-commissioning, the ship was assigned to the US Destroyer Division Two Six One. The assignment included visits to many ports of call and traveled completely around the world including an assignment to the Korean Theater in January of 1952. Bill was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Bill was honorably discharged from the US Navy on August 29, 1952, having served four years and five days on active duty. After his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Bill worked as a production technician for Motorola in Chicago at their military equipment division. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa. As the years rolled on, he worked for a number of other companies including Admiral Corp, Trak Microwave, Collins Radio, Harris Corp, where he was employed for 19 years and earned the title of Senior Scientist. While with Harris Corp and Westinghouse he traveled extensively internationally. Bill enjoyed working with the Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) designing innovative solutions. He ended his career with Westinghouse in Baltimore, MD, in 1995 with a total of 63 patents. Bill loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a genuine individual that will be missed by his family and friends. His passing will leave a void in the hearts of the people who loved him that will be hard to fill.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his three children, Patrick McGann and his wife Juanita of Ft. Worth, TX, Karen Mulheron and her husband William of Oakton, VA, and Pamela Jones and her husband Edward of Pearland, TX, with whom he made his home; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and brother Edward McGann and his partner Sylvia of Portland, CT, as well as many other relatives and friends. Bill was predeceased by his parents and three siblings, John McGann, James McGann, Suzanne Simmons and great granddaughter Eleanora Claire Fricke.

A graveside service for Bill will be held at a later date at the Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery, East St., Windsor, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Evermore at www.live-evermore.com/donate/, a non-profit making the world a more livable place for bereaved families, founded by Bill's granddaughter Joyal Mulheron.
