I emailed WR regularly.  I consider him a dear friend as well as a great teacher.  I'd like to share some of his last email to me: 
If you have some spare time you might read some of the 19th century British novels of Trollop.  Democracy stinks but what is the alternative.  I am too old to be king.

Dr Smith was one of my favorite professors at Pitt. Had him for a number of classes. My condolences to his family.
