Juan Mendez

1926 - 2018

Juan "Bob" Mendez, passed away on May 20, 2018; at the age of 92. Juan was born on March 8, 1926 in Stockton, CA., to Jose and Leonor Mendez. As a child growing up in Lodi, he was active in football and baseball. He was a graduate of Lodi Union High School, class of 1943.
He served in the Marine's and was a part of the invasion of Okinawa, during WWII. Juan was a purple heart recipient, and was honorably discharged, after serving his country proudly. He was also a member of the National Guard, and retired in 1968. Juan worked for the City of Lodi for over 30 years, and he retired in 1986, as the Superintendent of Parks.
Juan was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi, and served as a deacon from 1981-2006. He ministered to Migrants; oversaw the Spanish Catechism program; and baptized over 5000 children over the years. He retired from serving others as a deacon, at the age of 80. Juan was also a founding and active member of the Mexican American Catholic Federation of Lodi.
Juan was married to Elvira Esparza Mendez for 45 years and had one daughter, Leticia Mendez West. He enjoyed spending time with family, and especially watching his granddaughter Brianna play softball. In his free time he also was an accomplished golfer.
Mr. Mendez preceded in death by his wife, Elvira Mendez; siblings; Lupe Montalvo, Patricia Velsquez, Joe Mendez, John Mendez, Charles Mendez, and Jimmy Mendez. He is survived by his daughter, Leticia West and her husband, Clifton; and his granddaughter Brianna Mendez. He is also survived by his siblings, Virginia Mittleider and Christina, "Rosie" Barajas; as well as many nieces and nephews. His family will miss him greatly, as well as many friends.
A viewing will be on Tues., May 29, 2018, between the hours of 2:00-6:00 with a Rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m., at the Vineyard Chapel, located at Cherokee Memorial Park, 14165 Beckman Rd., in Lodi.
A funeral mass for Mr. Mendez will be on Wed., May 30 at 10 a.m., to be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Cherokee Memorial Park.
