Aaron R. Levin, MD
Mamaroneck - Dr. Aaron R. Levin, a pioneer in the treatment of pediatric congenital heart disease, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018 at age 89 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Born and raised in South Africa, he graduated from high school at age 15. He went on to receive a Bachelors of Science and M.B.B.Ch from the University of the Witwatersrand, followed by a doctorate in Pediatric Cardiology.
He trained at Coronation Hospital in Johannesburg and at Charing Cross Hospital in London, received his FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians) in Edinburgh, and completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Duke University.
He developed the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, where he was Professor of Pediatric Cardiology. In recognition of his innovative work, he was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology as a distinguished young researcher. He served as director of the laboratory for 29 years, lecturing nationally and internationally and authoring over 80 publications.
He devoted his professional life to research and the management of children with congenital heart disease and continued to care for many of them into their adulthood. He was most proud of his three children, participating in the graduation processional as each received a medical degree from Cornell University Medical College.
After his tenure at Cornell, he continued as a clinical consultant in Pediatric Cardiology at Westchester Medical Center, and Professor at Westchester Medical College.
He retired at age 85 from medical practice.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dr. Lenore Z. Gladstone, whom he met at a camp for underprivileged children where he was camp physician; and his three children, Sheryl Levin MD, Terry Levin MD (Theodore Miller MD), and Serle Levin MD (Judi Kirschenbaum JD). He was adored as Pawpaw by his grandchildren: Jeremy and Evan Thompson; Elissa, Jacob (Miryam), Benjamin and Landon Miller; Michael, Madeline and Andrew Levin.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and devoted to his patients. A gentleman and a gentle man.
