JOHN BURROWS Obituary
Burrows, John Shober, Jr. on September 24, 2009 peacefully at home in Scarsdale at age 97. Born in Norfolk, Va. To John S. and Elizabeth (Dove Corner) Burrows. John Burrows Jr. was the first Eagle Scout for Troop 4. He graduated Taft School and Yale College with a Masters Degree in Architecture. While at Yale he studied Naval Science and received his Commisson. On his watch in the Naval Dept. code room, Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was on the mine sweeper #1096 in the Aleutian Islands during the battle of Midway. He took command of the USS Edmonds DE406 in 44'. He served with distinction thru the battle of Okinawa and received numerous campaign medals: Two Legion of Merit with Battle Stars and retired as captain in 1948. In his career as an architect he worked with Felheimer and Wagner in the redesign of Grand Central Station. He worked on the first CBS studio. He joined the firm that later became Urban, Brayton and Burrows. He participated in Defense contracts including Aviano Airbase, and Bergamo in Italy. He published "This Is Your Home" to assist returning veterans. He also designed the first plans for handicapped accessible home for veterans as well. He helped in the design of the Particle Accelerator in Batavia, ILL. He helped design the vehicle assembly building on Launch Pad 39 in Cape Canaveral where the Shuttle and the Apollo moon missions were housed. He helped design a radio telescope for the US Navy and worked to create the SUNY system. He was on the Landmark Preservation Commission with Mayor Wagner helping to save structures on Governor's Island and the Lowe's Paramount. He loved the sea and nautical architecture. He is predeceased by his wife Marion, his brother Douglas C. He is survived by his children John S. III, Bonnie Gandelman, H.D. Burrows, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home 767 East Boston Post Rd. Mamaroneck. A memorial by the American Legion Post 52 will take place Tuesday 11 AM at Memorial Gardens, Mamaroneck Rd. Scarsdale.
