JOHN RIDA Obituary

John W. Rida, 90, of Somers, a former 55 year resident of Mt. Vernon died on January 4, 2008. He was born in Narva, Estonia on June 13, 1917 to Willem and Amelia Rida. He fled from Estonia to the United States at age 13 and later enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a seaman on the USS Tucker until he became a translator for the Navy during World War II. Talented as a linguist in eight languages, he participated as a translator during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. He also worked as a translator for the United Nations until the Mid-1950s. He then became a salesman for Good Humor in Mt. Vernon and throughout Westchester County. He will be remembered as the devoted husband of Frances (nee Trippodo) and the beloved father of Helga Stanton and her husband Robert. He was the loving grandfather of Corinne Procopis and her husband Michael, Robert Stanton Jr., Janine Lamb and her husband Rick, and Rick Stanton and his wife Nicole. He will also be remembered as the devoted great-grandfather of Diana, Michael, Rick, Rachael and Chloe. The family will receive friends at CLARK ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME, KATONAH, NY on Sunday, January 6, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9. The Funeral will be held on Monday, January 7, 2008 at St. Joseph's RC Church in Croton Falls at 10AM. Internment will follow at Ivandell Cemetery.
