MANFRED RIEDEL Obituary
Manfred Hansjoachim Riedel of Tarrytown died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at the age of 71. He was born in Germany on May 31, 1928 to Paul and Marta Riedel. In 1934, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee and served in the United States Army immediately afterwards. Mr. Riedel attended the University of Illinois, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering, and then his Masters of Science in Architecture early in the 1950's. He married Barbara Corbett in 1951 and they moved to New York City before moving to Tarrytown in 1958, where Mr. Riedel designed and built the family home; Barbara died in 1968. During the 1960's, Mr. Riedel was the Chief Architect for the Project Apollo Launch Control Center and Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Kennedy. In 1969, he married Patricia Verrilli of Mamaroneck. During the 1970's, he was the principal of his own architectural firm, Manfred H. Riedel, AIA, Architects, in Manhattan. He was a past Secretary of the New York City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and served as the Chairman of the Energy and Environment Committee and also the Technology Committee. He was a member of the Natural Environment Committee of the AIA, Washington, DC Chapter. For the past decade, Mr. Riedel concentrated on projects involving the adaptive re-use, restoration and renovation of landmark buildings, such as the Cavalry Stables at West Point and the Foley Square Court House in Manhattan. A concerned and dedicated member of the Tarrytown community, Mr. Riedel served the Village from the mid-seventies to the early eighties as the Executive Director of the Community Development Program, directing such projects as the design and construction of its waterfront recreational facilities and participating in the inventory of its historic buildings. A lifelong advocate of environmental issues, in 1975 Mr. Riedel started the first Tarrytown recycling program, TRASH, Tarrytown Recycling And Salvaging Headquarters, which was staffed on Saturdays by enthusiastic high school students he recruited. Since 1974 he has been a member of the Tarrytown Transportation Council and has served as Chairman since 1995. For over twenty years he has been an active and enthusiastic advocate of the Tarrytown YMCA; since 1976 he has served on its Board of Directors and more recently as the Chairman of the Building-House-Property Committee. He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Patricia Riedel of Tarrytown; four children, Catherine Corbett Riedel Ward of San Francisco, Richmond Manfred Riedel of Los Angeles, George DiCenzo Riedel of Baltimore and Elyn Renee Riedel of Manhattan; his brother Erdmann K. H. Riedel of Rye; and four grandchildren Megan, Sarah, Richie and Brittany. Friends may visit the family residence in Tarrytown on Tuesday, July 27 from 4 to 8pm and on Wednesday, July 28 from 4 to 8pm.
