Matthew McGuinness Obituary

McGuinness, Matthew P.

Matthew P. McGuinness passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 5, 2014 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 23, 1968 in New York City to Maura Linehan McGuinness and Jack McGuinness. Matthew graduated from Albertus Magnus High School, attended Iona College and received his B.S. degree from Nyack College. He was employed by Con Edison for 20 years. He was an avid golfer and enthusiastic Met fan. He completed the New York City Marathon and his passion for running continued with regular visits to Rockland Lake. He thoroughly enjoyed working with the students at Albertus Magnus HS where he coached basketball and baseball. Matthew was one of a kind. He touched so many people with his great heart and most of all through his unique sense of humor, putting smiles on the faces of so many people throughout the years. He is at peace now in some dugout in heaven coaching the angels.

He is survived by his parents Maura and Jack, his siblings Christine, John (Maureen) and Deirdre (Lou) Llach. He was the proud uncle of his adoring nieces and nephews, Abigail, Maille, Kaleigh, Jack, Sean and Ava. And most importantly, the love of his life, Jeanmarie Flaherty, whose support during his illness was immeasurable.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, NY. Visitation will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main St, New City NY on Tuesday April 8 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church, Cinder Road, Garnerville, NY on Wednesday April 9 at 10am. Interment at Ascension Cemetery, Monsey, New York.

Matt always made me laugh. I wanted to hug him even when he was driving me crazy in class. He will be remembered as one of my favorite students in a teaching career that spanned 50 years.

Again, on a light note, let me add an additional baseball incident that proves Matt's zany, quirky and unforgettable personality. We had runners on 2nd and 3rd (Albertus), with 1 out, and a 3-2 count on the Magnus hitter. (I forget who we were playing.) Matt was on 3rd - I was coaching 3rd base. Before the pitch, I told Matt you are going nowhere - it's 1 out and the bases are not loaded, "Right coach," says Matt - and then proceeds to nonchalant towards home, in a trot, as the opposing pitcher is delivering the ball. This unorthodox, unbelievable move by Matt apparently didn't phase the catcher as he calmly threw the ball back to the pitcher, as Matt crossed the plate. Of course the opposing pitcher was irate over the catcher's not knowing the situation, while the opposing manager was in a state of apoplexy as the Albertus batter (Matt) calmly stole home in a walk. After thus I called this play the "McGuiness secret weapon." I'm sure Matt's teaching this play in heaven to the angels who have a sort of perplexed look on their face.

I knew Matt as a teenage kid - and he was a wonderful, energetic, full of laughs young man. Rest In Peace, Matthew.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire McGuinness Family. His true journey is just beginning.

April 9, 2014

My deepest sympathies to the entire McGuiness family. As Matt's baseball coach at Albertus Magnus, I always found him to be upbeat, positive and quite unique in his demeanor. Although he sometimes drove me "crazy" with his unorthodox shenanigans, his heart was always in the right place in competing in this great game that we all love and respect. As I look back, I remember one great talent of Matt's that I, foolishly, firmly endorsed. When an opposing pitcher had our number - which was quite often - Matt asked me if he could hit a line drive at his legs to incapacitate the pitcher. I said, "sure, why not," thinking that he couldn't perform that feat. Well, Matt did it two times (in today's politically correct climate, Matt and I would be permanently disbarred from high school baseball), and we won both games.
On an other occasion, we were playing Rye H.S., in a back-to back home and away series, and Matt got in a confrontation with the Rye first base man. Both players were ejected from the game, and thus by the rules, couldn't play the next game. When we ventured to Rye, in Westchester County, their coach, trying to pull a "fast one," said they never heard of such a rule in Westchester. I sort of felt that this unscrupulous coach was going to do something like this, so I brought Matt along "undressed" for baseball. When I found out that he was going to play his ejected player, I told Matt to get dressed and he was going to play. Of course, Matt, being super-man, hit a home run in the 7th inning, and we won the game. True, poetic justice!

Again, I am very sorry for your loss, and I will definitely make a donation to Albertus Magnus H.S. in Matt's name.

R.I.P. Matt

I tried to be a stern disciplinarian in the classroom, but Matt could always get me to laugh and then all the kids knew it was over--they had me--right in the palms of their hands. He would make me change assignments and test dates because they interfered with his athletic commitments. That smile and his "C'mon Gav - have a heart" will warm my heart forever.
