William Pekrol of Valley Cottage NY passed away peacefully at Nyack Hospital Wednesday morning, April 6, 2016 of complications from a stroke he suffered exactly 4 years earlier - to the day - on April 6, 2012. He was 67. Bill was born May 21, 1948 in Newark, NJ to William and June Hendrickson Pekrol. He was raised in Newark, Hackettstown and Belleville, NJ. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1974 obtaining the rank of Sergeant.
He was employed by different Social Services Agencies in New York City during his career of working with the poor and the disadvantaged and was well known as one who cared for those who were underserved and neglected. He was a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Nyack where he served on the Parish Council and worked with the youth program. He was also a member of the Nyack Indian Foundation.
Bill was an exceptional person who loved to laugh and was always the life of the party, and a loyal friend who would always lift everyone's spirits. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who he loved so much and who loved him in return.
He is survived by his caregiver and companion Mark Mills, good friend Jay Conklin and numerous friends; his daughter Stacey Schutts and her husband David of Washington, NJ and his grandchildren Brittnee, Daniel, and Nicholas Brown, Patrick and Madisen Schutts, and his great-grandson Connor. He is also survived by his son Shawn and his wife Janie of Florence AZ; his sisters Sharon (Antoinette) and Donna (Linda); and his brothers Tom Sr. (Tina) and David, and sister-in-law Anne Pekrol. He was predeceased by his sister Darlene Pekalski and his brother Brian Pekrol Sr.
Visitation will be at the Hannemann Funeral Home, 88 South Broadway Nyack, NY, Friday, 6-9pm, April 29, 2016. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, 16 Jefferson Street Nyack, NY, 12 noon Saturday, April 30, 2016. All are welcome to attend the interment prior to the Mass at 10:30am at Gethsemane Cemetery, 310 Rockland Lake Road, Rockland Lake, NY.
William's family and friends would like to thank the staff at Friedwald Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in New City, the staff at Nyack Hospital and especially Dr. Roy Eriksen and Dr. Azfar Chak for their considerate and compassionate care during these past years. Your kindness will always be remembered.
