Floyd Dunn Obituary
FLOYD "PAUL" DUNN, PhD, CPA , 92 of Ashburn, Virginia passed on Monday, February 13, 2023.
Born Saturday, March 1, 1930, in Vincennes, Indiana to the late Rev. Floyd B. Dunn and the late Eulalia (Glenn) Dunn. Paul grew up in College Corner, Tipton and Frankfort, Indiana where his father pastored churches. Paul spent many of his summers working with his brothers at his grandfather Glenn's farm near Vincennes, Indiana. After graduating high school from Pilgrim High School in Frankfurt Indiana in 1948, Paul enrolled in classes at Purdue University to begin work on his Bachelor's degree. He eventually transferred and completed his BS in Education from Indiana University in 1952. Paul then continued his education graduating from the University of Richmond with his Masters of Commerce in 1965, and then his PhD in Business Administration from American University in 1973. His pursuit of continued education led to the successful completion in obtaining he Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) certification.
Immediately following his college completion, Paul served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning from a tour in Japan, he taught high school before starting a successful career in civil service. Following a distinguished career at the Pentagon, he worked his last few years as a Senior Planning Officer in the National Preparedness Directorate for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).. Upon retirement from Civil Service, Paul returned to teaching at several colleges and universities. These included Trevecca Nazarene University, James Madison University, University of Virginia, George Mason University, Old Dominion University (satellite campus) and Northern Virginia Community College. Paul returned to government service for a few short years to work again at FEMA.
Paul, fondly known as Papa by his grandchildren and Great-Papa by his great-grandchildren, was a doting, active grandfather. In an effort to remain busy and possibly provide employment opportunities for the grandkids, he started Paul Vending. That business quickly grew to over 50 locations. He remained active with this business until the age of 86. He was loved by all at each location.
For those that knew Paul, he is probably best known for his humble, gentle spirit, his servants heart, his love for others and most of all, his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Paul was predeceased by his wife of 23 1/2 years in 1977, the late Rachel Sober Dunn (daughter of Harvey L Sober and Floy Head Sober), brothers John (Wilma) Dunn and Philip (Marjorie) Dunn, sister-in law Hazel Sober Cooke, brothers-in-law, Jerrel Sober, Franklin Sober, David Sober and Eugene Sober.
Paul leaves his family to cherish his memory including his son, Myron (Susan) Dunn of Nokesville, VA, and his daughter, Jennifer (Leonard) Willard of Ashburn, VA, former daughter in law Sherri Dunn of Herndon ; Grandchildren, Ryan Dunn, Sarah Dunn, Alexander (Elizabeth) Dunn, Erin (Wayne) Gray, Benjamin (Katherine) Willard and Katie Willard; Step Grandchild Justin Branick, Great Grandchildren Violet Gray, Hazel Gray, Daniel Gray, Milo Dunn ,Mackenzie Willard, and Orion Branick.
He is also survived by his brother Samuel (Lois) Dunn of Nampa, Idaho and sisters-in-law: Nancy Sober of Manakin Sabot, VA, E. Hope Sober Conrad, of Sunbury. PA, and Louise Sober of Hopewell, VA; Brother-in-law, Raymond Cooke of Suffolk, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, Virginia.
A Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 27, 2023, at Cornerstone Chapel located at 650 Battlefield Parkway SE Leesburg, Virginia 20175 with Pastor Mike Emerson and Mark Powell officiating. Graveside services and interment with Pastor Gary Smith, with military honors, will follow at 12:30pm, in Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA.
