Michael Grimes Obituary

Dr. Michael Wesley Grimes

Louisville - 60, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 19, 2020.

He was born on August 23, 1960 in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Manual High School and received his B.S. at the University of Kentucky. He then followed in the footsteps of his father and attended Auburn University, graduating with his doctorate in veterinary medicine. He later joined his father and Dr. Elizabeth Wood in practice at the Grimes and Wood Animal Clinic, located on Poplar Level Road.

In his personal life, he cultivated many long-time friendships and was full of joy. He was ready to help when asked, and was always there when his mother called. He enjoyed spending many of his days off fishing on small lakes. He was generous to both friends and family, and enjoyed entertaining.

Professionally, his many faithful clients praised him for his compassionate care of their animals, his kindness and his honesty. He treasured his loyal staff at the clinic.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. George W. Grimes, and by his brother, Russell C. Grimes.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Grimes; two brothers, David (Debbie) and Patrick (Angela); his loving companion, Mary-Jo Horton; nephews Matthew, Bryan, Aidan, and Jackson; and great-nephews, Mason, Maverick and Maxton. He also leaves behind several furry felines that he loved and cared for.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Audubon Park United Methodist Church; 3200 Poplar Level Rd. Masks are required due to coronavirus restrictions and those considered high risk are cautioned about attending.

He was the BEST! He helped my three cats and dog religiously. He knew what I felt in my heart each time one of my babies had to be put asleep. I will never ever forget this godly man. God Bless him and his family. Midnight, Sharon and Sue. We thank you for all you do for our loved ones. Amen.

Dr. Mike was one of the kindest people I have had the opportunity to know. He is missed so much by his
heavenly and earthly patients who are deprived of his gentle soul. I am sure, however that the world is a much better place because he lived here and his legacy will continue to provide a beacon for those who are looking for ways to promote his compassion and commitment to all creatures.

He was truly "one of a kind."

Time will not erase Dr. Mike from our hearts and minds. Even today, when I think of the loving care he gave my fur babies, tears come to my eyes and my heart aches. It has taken me a year to find a vet who can even come close to Dr. Mike.

Doctor Mike took care of my pets for 30 years. I am shocked and lost without him.
He was the best.

Mike was our family vet for years. My 3 cats, Midnight, Sharon by window, my boy cat named Sue. Midnight had 6 front nails. They lived with me 17 yrs. They all 3 passed away in 2017. Missed is not the word. when we had to put Midnight to sleep, I told Mike I wouldn't cry. After the shot, Mike said, "I'll be back." he handed me a box of kleenex, Mike left the room, and I cried. What a man!

I am in complete shock today upon hearing that my beloved family Veterinarian Dr Grimes is gone away from us. I cannot express my deepest sympathy to everyone whom like me and my pets along with numerous clients I referred to him and they too cherished his gift and love for each and every pet he helped over the years. My beloved vet and friend whom I looked at as part of our family, is gone. I KNOW he is with his patients he served with love, honor and grace over the years, they are all together again in heaven where our innocents that pass away and their friend, Dr Grimes, they are all together again! I look forward too seeing Dr Grimes in heaven when the Lord takes me too; I pray in the name of our loving Father and through the precious blood of our savior Jesus Christ. Thank you. Beth M Theis, Isabelle, Tank, Boo and our puppies; Roxy, Precious and Pebbles are with him now.

Dr. Michael Grimes was one of the kindest and most special people I have ever known, and the best vet anyone could ever wish for to care for their pets. I just learned of Dr. Grimes' passing today, and I apologize in being so late with my condolences to his family. I knew Dr. Michael when he was "Young Grimes" and his father, also an excellent vet, was Dr. Grimes Sr. That was in 1982 when they were the neighborhood veterinary clinic. After all these years, this has been the most special clinic with the most caring vets and staff. No one will ever replace Dr. Michael. My dogs and my family will miss him tremendously. He was one of a kind.

Dr Grimes was a wonderful man. He was always very caring to our felines and always had time to answer a question and explain. Very warm man. Many prayers for the family and friends. God Bless Dr Michael Grimes.

Dr. Mike made a huge contribution to my life and the lives and passings of my beloved dogs. I was blessed to be introduced to him by Shamrock Foundation when i and my 2 Corgis were homeless. It's been 20 years with this incredible animal man and I've been so so blessed to have him take care of my dogs and to have known a true vet who always gave his best care of my feelings as well as taking exceptional care of my dogs. There will never be another one like him. I am truly heartbroken and I pray for comfort and peace for his family, his friends and all of us that were so blessed to have known him. God speed and God bless Dr. Mike. You will be sorely missed.

"What more can e'er be said, but thanks and thanks and ever thanks." Even Shakespeare's words are not good enough to express my feelings for Dr. Mike, who took care of my fur-babies for more than 25 years. We are devastated at our loss. On the other hand, Dr. Mike is where we all want to be: back home.

Praying for his many friends and family. Dr. Mike was always thoughtful and caring about his patients and their owners. He and his staff were team players in their patients care and so very gentle when the end came. We will miss our Doctor Mike and friend. He was one of the best.

October 26, 2020

Mike was my vet for 20+ years. He was compassionate, funny, and incredibly informative--he could talk the hind leg off a mule, but it would be an educated mule when he finished, and ready to make hard decisions well. Best of all, he really seemed to be crazy about cats; I believe I saw real affection when he looked at mine. I am terribly shocked at his death, and hope Dr. Wood can keep the practice going; there's never been a better veterinary hospital in Louisville than Grimes and Wood, and that includes some much fancier places in the East End that give cold, snooty care. Rest well, Mile, and save me a fishin' spot in the Big Lake.

October 26, 2020

Dr. Mike was always patient, honest, and understanding with all of our pets and even our boys. He was one truly amazing person and he will be truly missed. I know he is at the Rainbow Bridge with all of the pets that he has cared for and that have passed over the years.....even with Preston, Jake, Murphy, and Tiger. Rest in peace and may God Bless your friends and family at this time of loss. Love, Ash, Liz, Saylor, Hudson, and Memphis Artman

October 25, 2020

Ohh Dr. Mike.. It was 14 years ago when you Denise, and the clinic became part of my family. I was 19 years old with one cat (Angel) a baby that was 1 (Julia) and been only living in louisville for a little over a year. I needed a great vet, but didn't have a lot of money, and I had no idea what a treasure I had found at first. Fast-forward to now. I have 2 dogs (Rolly and Faline),6 cats (3 shamrock babies), my 2 kids Julia and Christopher, and Dr. Mike Denise, and the clinic have been here for all of it. Going to the clinic was always a fun trip for the family and fur babies. It was visiting family. Through laughs, tears, holidays, puppies, kittens, diabetes, broken legs, cut paws, anxiety, sensitivity and allergies, surgeries, urinary tract infections, fallopian tubes, phone calls, to crossing some of my babies over the Rainbow Bridge, you were my fur babies rock and the dad I could call for my fur babies. The last time I was with Dr. Mike he was holding my dog Shadow and myself as we helped him cross the bridge from cancer on April 28th. And I could go on and on with stories. To say this has hit me hard is an understatement.

Dr. Mike loved all of us like family, but he truly loved our animals as if they were his own. He didn't care about the money or who you were, he just cared and loved purely. I always called him the great country doctor everyone needed. To his family, Mary Jo, Denise, Misty, Dr. Wood and the clinic, my heart and tears are with you all and I'm so very sorry he is gone. The world has lost a great one!

Rest in peace Dr. Mike and fly free! Enjoy your dad and fishing. Love on Angel, Autumn, and Shadow for the kids and me. Watch over us and all our fur babies. We will all always love and remember you! Xoxoxo

I am still in shock over the devastating news of Dr. Mike's passing. He was referred to me 20yrs ago by Shamrock Foundation. Having to replace him as a vet for my furkids is gonna be a challenge cause Dr. Mike was absolutely a Godsend to me and my pets. He was very passionate in what he did. He treated our babies like his own and not only was he our vet Dr. Mike and his staff were and are like family. There just isn't enough words to describe how important or amazing he was. Dr. Mike will FOREVER be remembered and loved as our Friend and our family and one of the most passionate/caring vets ever. Our hearts shatter in mourning..

I am so sadden to learn about the sudden death of Dr. Mike. To Dr. Mike, being an outstanding vet was not just a job . . . it was a love and passion both for his animal patients and for their owners. My Friend, My Teacher, My Doctor. While I sit here holding Dr. Mike a dog named after you. I sit here and reflect how you spent hours and hours and hours teaching me things like how to listen to the lungs how to listen to the heart and the valves. How to do so many things. All the comfort you gave me and my pets. All I can do is just sit here and try to accept I will never see you again in this world. Thank You for teaching me. I can remember how you’d try to pay me when I fixed things for you and I wouldn’t take your money cause I would say what do I owe you for all you have taught me over the years. You are paid in full and will always be fully invested and owe me nothing. Dr. Mike My Friend while I sit and try to understand why and accept what it is. I hold Dr. Mike the dog named after you and your Dads namesake tears come into my eyes a pain like no other in my heart. I love and miss you Dr. Mike. Thank You for all the things you taught me. You are a friend I will never have again.
Oh I want to share how much Sharon Mayes, Ginny Stottman, Carmelita Carmella, Misty Waldon Asher Mari and last but not least Denise Florence, care about you and truly love and miss you. Denise she’s a trooper she is somehow holding it all together to try to do all that needs to be done in your behalf. I told Carmelita what you told me a while back and she told me I should tell Denise I will when I talk to her again. One other thing your long time partner Dr. Woods although retired is also helping Denise finalize everything.and Jim your best friend cares and is hurting too about you.. I left word that if Jim, ever he needs someone to talk to I would Listen. I Miss you my friend. Pet Alley and the rest of the gang for me. Dr. Michael Grimes was very passionate about his job. He treated me very respectful when I brought my animals in to him. My Honeybear (dog) was 13 years old and needed to be put down. He let me stay in the room with her as he administered the death shot. It was hard on me, but he was so comforting and so kind. He will be missed. God bless all his patients and their animals. Ramona Setser

October 22, 2020

I am so shocked and sad about the passing of Dr. Mike Grimes. I cried for a long time after reading his Obit in today's C-J newspaper. As so many have already written, Dr. Mike was such a wonderful Vet and he was so kind and caring for my dog. His gentleness and sincere kindness for both humans and animals was always present. The dogs I've owned/loved through the years have been patients of the doctors at the Grimes-Wood Animal Clinic, and I and my pets have dearly loved the doctors and their staff members. You knew and could trust when you took your pet(s) to the doctors (Dr. George Grimes, Dr. Michael Grimes, and Dr. Elizabeth Wood) there that they would take the best of care of your "baby"/"babies." It was so sad when Dr. George passed, and upsetting when Dr. Elizabeth Wood Retired, and now the passing of Dr. Mike is unthinkable at such a fairly young age. Dr. Mike Grimes will not only be missed by everyone who knew him in his personal life, and especially his dear family and close friends, but he will also be missed by all of the Pet "Parents" like me and of course by the dear special pets like my precious dog Josie. My deepest Sympathy to Dr. Mike's family and close friends and personal loved ones and to his Staff at the Grimes-Wood Animal Clinic. You are all in my prayers. Rest in Peace Dr. Mike and know that many hearts are thinking of you. A light shining bright like yours did will continue to glow on in our memories and the kindness you taught us to convey to our pets and those humans around us. God bless your family in this time of sorrow. // R. Setser --& Mom to my dog Josie -- a Mini Dachshund patient for 10 years at the Grimes-Wood Animal Clinic).

October 22, 2020

I am at a loss to find the words that say how terribly sorry I am that Mike has left us and moved on to another plane. I am deeply sorry that the members of his family and other loved ones must suffer this pain. Shirley and Mary-Jo, especially, please know that I am thinking about you and praying for you. For me, Mike has been a part of my extended family since the boys started school and playing together these many, many years ago. He was over at our house so much of the time when we lived on Parklawn, and I believe the fellows had some adventures I didn't learn about until after they were all grown. Mike loved Amanda's spaghetti and my red beans and rice, and there was always a space at our table for Mike. As the years have gone by, I have been continually impressed by Mike's unusual kindness, gentleness, and thoughtfulness. He was a true Southern gentleman from the old school. Mike wove many, many threads into the fabric of the Roubieu family life and they will remain there forever to remind us of this dear friend and man.

I can't begin to tell you how heartbroken I am for the family of Dr. Mike. He was one of the kindest, most compassionate people I've ever met. He took care of three of my dogs, my sister's dog, and my nephew's dogs since 2002. I considered him a friend as well as a doctor. Dr. Grimes saw our dogs for over 30 years. First met him while he was at Iroquois Animal Clinic. He was so wonderful with Sugar who had seizures that my mother decided to follow Dr Grimes when he joined his father's practice. His warm and caring demeanor made him a great person and a wonderful veterinarian.
Thank you Dr. Grimes for taking of Sugar, Lucky, Thunder, and Maggie.

Dr Mike - Has been our vet for over a decade. He was an exceptional guy that I had to talk into charging me enough half of the time. After my brother's murder when my dog passed on his birthday I asked Dr Mike - How can you deal with all of this inevitable death. He told me about his brother dying and coming to terms with the fact that "we are all heading for the cliff" that it is a part of life and it's okay. Somehow that was comforting and I have repeated it many times. We have literally been in tears. To many, our grief will seem out of proportion for someone who was our vet. Dr. Mike was so much more. He will be so missed in this community. Dr Mike the cliff came sooner than any of us would have preferred may you fly free sweet man

We are truly heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Dr. Mike. Our family has been clients at the clinic since it opened. Anytime anyone we knew needed a vet that is who we sent them to. Mike was the most compassionate vet and friend I will ever know. We thought of him as our family. I will never forget all his phone calls for advice and the time he took for everyone. I know he is heaven surrounded by all the animals he cared for over the years. Our thoughts, prayers, and love go to his family. Mike you will truly be forever missed and loved!!!

I am totally devastated at the passing of such a wonderful, caring, hardworking man who would throw sense of humor into the mix. I was a long time client and friend and for a while I assisted Dr. Mike at his clinic and never saw him utter a terse word or a curse word. Some animals were teeth and claws and Dr. Mike won them over with his gentleness. He was the same with humans. This world was a better place with him in it! Much love and prayer to his family at this time and to his mother who he spoke about with great fondness. His memories will never fade from my heart. Godspeed Dr. Mike!

Mike, you not only were a wonderful vet but a wonderful Friend and good person; I was blessed to have met you years ago through Mary- Jo who is one of my closest Friends and you then accepted me into your circle and you made me feel like you had know me forever. You were always there for my furbabies and giving me advise and treating them and would take as much time needed to explain things when I was worried about them. Your time was always willingly given and I am just not sure what so many of us are going to do now with you not here. Thank you Mike for your kindness and your compassion and hope you and your Dad enjoy the fishing in Heaven as I know he was very happy to see you. God Bless you Mike.

Dr. Mike Grimes was more than a vet, he was a treasured friend. He cared for our rescues for many years.
He healed them so they could move on to a home, and stayed by their side when we had to let them go.
He was always there when we needed him, and will be missed more than words can express.
It was an absolute honor to have known him.

Best vet ever! I have brought my pets there for 30 plus years! I nicknamed him Doctor Doolittle! He would talk to the animals like people. He will be missed by everyone who knew him with two legs and four. Rest in heaven with the angels Dr. Mike!
