Roberta Lukes Obituary

LUKES, ROBERTA DOROTHY, 48, of Arlington, MA, died June 15, 2009, at Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading, MA, after a long illness. She was born in Erie, PA, daughter of Robert and Mary Lukes. She is survived by her husband, Michael Tsuk; her parents; her sisters, Anita Goetz of Louisville, Christina Morris of Indianapolis, IN and Marguerite Lukes of Brooklyn, NY. She was preceded in death by her sister, Stephanie Stone; and her brother, Anthony Lukes. Roberta was a graduate of Waggener High School in Louisville, where she was a student in the Advanced Program, member of the National Honor Society, and a National Merit Scholar. She had joined the Louisville Youth Orchestra while in the seventh grade, and advanced to first chair violist in her junior year of high school. In her senior year, she was hired as a violist in the Louisville Orchestra. She attended the Interlochen Music Academy summer program for two summers while in high school. She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana as a music major, graduating in 1984. While at the University of Illinois, she was named the Presser Scholar in 1983 and upon her graduation in 1984, she was awarded University Honors and Bronze Tablet for her academic excellence. She then entered the graduate school at Harvard University to further her studies in musicology. She was awarded the degree Master of Arts in 1989, and the degree Doctor of Philosophy in 1996; both degrees were in musicology. While at Harvard, she taught in the music department as a teaching assistant. Roberta Lukes and Michael Tsuk were married on June 17, 1990 in the Memorial Church at Harvard University. Throughout their marriage, they resided in Arlington. She had many interests other than music and musicology. During graduate school, she was a volunteer tutor for the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council (now English At Large), providing one-on-one training instruction in basic reading and in English as a second language. She became the director of training and technology for the EMLC, and eventually created a private practice for aiding children with learning disabilities to improve their reading skills. She was also an artist, painting in watercolors, studying under Marjorie Glick of Boston, MA. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed hiking, canoeing and sailing. Roberta requested her body be donated to the Harvard University Medical School. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, with a reception following in the church hospitality room 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may go to English At Large, 400 High Street, Medford, MA 02155 or to the Louisville Youth Orchestra, PO Box 997, Louisville, KY, 40201-0997.

We here at the Louisville Youth Orchestra are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our "family". Programs are, of course, still here in the LYO office which contain Roberta's name and the many concerts in which she performed. The monies donated in her name will go directly to providing scholarships for economically disadvantaged violists within our ranks and our November concert will be dedicated to Roberta and her memory. Melody Welsh-Buchholz, Executive Director and staff member since 1986, Louisville Youth Orchestra

Roberta and I shared an apartment for two years, first in Arlington, then in Somerville, on Line Street, while we were both finishing our dissertations. Mine might have never been finished had it not been for the multitudes of conversations we had on anything and everything around the kitchen table, some which led to 'carbon sculptures' (food burned in the stove) or the occasional egg exploding on the ceiling because the water had boiled away. During those two years there were also Roberta's generals and my first jobs. Roberta was a wonderfully thoughtful, intelligent, and mature woman. When she listened, she made you feel that you had her full attention. She met her husband in the last months we shared the apartment, then our paths went separate ways. I am truly heartbroken at this injustice and send my deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Barbara Haggh-Huglo (PhD, Univ. Illinois, 1988; now Professor of Music at the University of Maryland, College Park)

I went to high school with Roberta - she was someone I really admired. We last spoke when embarking on entrance to college, and I remembered she was going to Illinois at Urbana. I actually just happened to speak of her about a month ago; I mentioned her to a colleague (an elementary school teacher) on June 17 when I was at a training seminar! Roberta's 30-year high school reunion was last night and many of us learned of her passing. This is so sad. We all missed her. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

Dear Michael and the Lukes family-In all my memory, I have never met anyone who displayed as much courage as Roberta in dealing with illness. I feel privileged to have had Roberta as a friend and a colleague at English At Large. I'll miss her deeply. Michael,my sympathy to you and all the family.

Michael and Mr. and Mrs. Lukes, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's been a long time since I knew Roberta in high school and youth orchestra. She was such a good friend and influence even though I was in Marguerite's classes. I loved living around the corner from you all. I always loved that I bought her viola. It started me winning orchestra jobs. Then when I sold it, I sold it to a violist in the L.O. and I believe it is still being played there to this day. I have many wonderful memories of her and wish very much that I could attend the memorial service in Louisville. My sympathy and warmest thoughts are with your entire family.

What a great loss. I was just thinking of Roberta the other day. We hadn't seen each other since high school, but her smile, her music and her wonderful personality have stayed with me all these years.
