BURLINGTON - Ernest D. Newton, 87, a Burlington resident nearly 50 years who had a TV repair service and served a longtime leading role at an Episcopal church in town, died Friday morning, Nov. 1, at the Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley in Billerica. He was the husband of Penny (Floyd) Newton, to whom he was married for 63 years.
He was born in Cambridge on Sept. 4, 1915, son of the late John and Alvina Newton. He grew up in Somerville, and he graduated from Thompson Academy in Boston. Mr. Newton was a Navy veteran, serving at end of World War II as a seaman second aboard the USS Helena. He was a recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Newton worked for many years at the B.F. Goodrich Co. in Watertown. He then was manager at the Northeastern University Bookstore, retiring after 10 years of service. Throughout his working career, Mr. Newton also had his own business on weekends, Ernie's Television Repair.
Mr. Newton and his wife were was among the founders of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Burlington. They helped build the first Episcopal Church on Lexington Street, and the current church on St. Mark's Road in Burlington. He was very active in the choir, Strawberry Festival, and the church fairs.
Besides his wife, he survived by five children, Ernest Newton and his wife Edna of Tyngsboro, Charles Newton and his wife Nancy of Hudson, N.H., Ginger and her husband Don Blanchet of Burlington, Judy and her husband Robert Luongo of North Attleboro, and Linda and her husband Richard Heigham of Alton, Va.; a brother, Frances Galvin of Norwood; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was also the brother of the late Catherine Sutton, Nellie Marobella, Nora Valentine, Harry, Arthur, William, and John Newton.
