Howard Hagerman Obituary
Holt, MI - Howard Harold Hagerman passed into the next life on Thursday, December 6, 2018. He was a remarkable man who lived 90 full, adventurous years.
He was born in Moline, Illinois on September 10, 1928. He served in the Navy as a SeaBee and became the first member of his family to attend college, graduating from Western Illinois University with a Master of Science degree in 1954. While there, he also met and married his life's love, Joan. He subsequently received his PhD from Purdue University. He taught biology at Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University until his retirement in 1996 as Professor Emeritus.
He faithfully served God as an elder in the Church of Christ for over 48 years, first at Holmes Road Church of Christ and, for the last 15 years, at Greater Lansing Church of Christ. He was a Bible scholar and taught many people, both in classes and individually. His passion for the Lord's work was legendary.
He also took an active interest in Christian education, having been a member of the Board of Trustees for Rochester College for many years as well as working with his wife to support the School of the Good Samaritan in Catacamas, Honduras.
He loved learning and teaching. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a wonderful friend to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was an avid gardener, cook, reader, and traveler. He had an insatiable curiosity about life and the world around him.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Joan, his sons Daniel (Lois) and David (Robyn Eckhardt), his granddaughters, Lauren Hagerman-Tekelly (Joseph), Bethany Hagerman-Rossetti (Nick), Rose-Marie Hagerman, and his great grandson, Joseph Harold Tekelly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mabel Hagerman.
The family welcomes visitors to remember him on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, from 5 - 8 PM at Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Home, Holt Chapel and then to celebrate his life in a service on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, 11 AM, also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service. Donations in his memory may be made to Rochester College or to Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University. Dan, Lois, and family,
Your Dad/Grandfather left quite the legacy! We are so glad to have had the opportunity to meet and get to know Howard and Joan. He had a full life here on earth, and we are rejoicing with God, Jesus, & the angels as he is now home in heaven. May you each keep what you loved most about him alive and active in your own lives! My mentor and colleague Dr. Howard H. Hagerman is with the Lord in heaven!.Here on Earth , he left a remarkable legacy.I can speak for hundreds of students, graduate students and myself.He made a difference in our lives! Dr. Hagerman exemplified what a university can be. .I thank the lord to have had this honest and caring man as my example for doing the important task we were assigned to do.I can hardly find enough words to convey my gratitude for the help he provided to me in all aspects of my professional journey at MSU. I had the privilege of knowing his loving family and I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to his wonderful wife Joan and to Dan and David ,the grandchildren and the rest of the family.
