Robert Coppage Obituary

Robert E. Coppage Sr. LUBBOCK-Robert E. Coppage Sr., 78, of Lubbock, passed away on Sept. 15, 2014. Robert was born to the parentage of the late Jessie and Annie Coppage-Wiley in Wortham, Texas, on June 20, 1937. He attended public school and later became a farm laborer and electrician's helper. He worked a few years for Ryan's Industrial Design, Posey Gin and Lubbock Electric. He also worked for High Plains Electric for over 20 years, a job he took great pride in doing. He was a member at Triumph Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev Edward Jennings, the late Rev. H.L. Brawley, and Rev. Ron Peguese, until the Lord guided him to move his membership to GT MT Zion Baptist Church of Crosbyton, Texas, under the leadership of Rev. Ruby N. Price. He served on the deacon board at GT MT Zion and was active in the Sunday school until his death. Robert (or Bones) was a very loving person with a voice that boomed when he laughed or talked. He was a true friend to any one that needed his help or advice; he never let his issues interfere with his life. Brother Robert took great pride in his family and loved them very much. He was married to Essie Mae Caldwell in Lubbock, Texas, in 1984. No children were born to that union. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Annie; a brother, Mitchell Coppage Jr.; sisters, Texanna Townsel, Nell Bradley, Aria Kennedy and Catherine Robinson; and his wife, Essie Mae Caldwell. He is survived by his two sons, Robert E. Coppage Jr. and LaVance Coppage (Melinda); two daughters, Mollie M. Thomas and Minister Deborah M. Hutchinson (Hillary, Jr.); two special daughters, Willie Faye (Baby) Jackson and Shelia Harris; four sisters, Mabel Willis, Odessa Lewis, Verdie Cornelius and Willie L. Lewis; three brothers, Edward Coppage, Sr. (Emma), Wilbert Wiley, S. (Sarah), and Rev. Billy Wiley (Elizabeth); seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of life services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at First Baptist Church, Crosbyton, Texas. Interment will follow in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary.

I worked with Robert in an automotive parts store in the 70s and was always impressed by his quick, infectious smile, kind spirit, and willing attitude. The world was a better place because of him; he will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

I grew up in Crosbyton. A man that my daddy (Galen Whitchurch) called Bones used to work for my dad. My dad thought very highly of him. I have bits & pieces of memories of him myself, as I was very young. I just want to express my sympathy to this family. Pamela (Whitchurch) Schepers
