GARRY FOY Obituary

GARRY FOY Garry Stuart Foy, 58, a theatrical consultant for performer flying and sound design, passed away Feb. 26, 2014, in Las Vegas. Garry was involved with Broadway theatre for the majority of his life. Born into a theatrical family, the son of Peter and Barbara Foy, Garry enjoyed a broad range of theatrical pursuits from a very early age. He studied acting at UNLV's children's theatre, but found a greater interest in sound and lighting design. He earned his Class 1 FCC license while still in high school and became the youngest DJ in the country, with his own radio show on KLUC FM. Garry graduated from Valley High School in 1974, soon became a member of IATSE Local 720, worked as a stage technician for Lido de Paris at the Stardust and toured with the Ice Capades as an Audio Supervisor. In 1979, Garry joined his father to create the flying for a Broadway revival of Peter Pan, personally flying Sandy Duncan for the show's run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York and the subsequent National Tour. He returned to Las Vegas to pursue a dual career as a Flying Director for Flying by Foy and a Head Soundman for Las Vegas production shows at the Hacienda and Riviera. Garry became Flying by Foy's President and Chief of Operations. He realized that there were advances that could be made in flying, using new technology without compromising the art. His love of electronics and sound design led to the creation of the world's first self-contained radio-controlled flying system. He spearheaded the addition of a 10,000 square foot studio facility dedicated to improving the art of flying and supervised the development of automated control systems for flying performers. The company remains the industry leader in flying automation today. Garry consolidated his passion for audio engineering and theatrical flying with the creation of Foy Flight and Sound. He was currently serving as Relief Soundman for the Las Vegas Hotel (LVH) and working as an independent consultant for flying and special effects. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123.

I just heard the news of Garry's passing. I am so sorry for your loss, Foy Family. I worked with Peter for many years at Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco and was honored to have met Garry only a couple of times during our installation at Club Fugazi. The theatrical world is a little colder without his presence. My condolences to the Foys.

My first memory of Garry was way back during our 1st Las Vegas Skating Club Ice Show. He was the skating cow. He was already a young teenager and a lot cooler than me. Years later when I was the back end of a dancing Camel, I thought of Garry everyday and it made me laugh. He also was nice enough to be the only one to get me on film in Ice Capades. He was very talented and kind and so important to so many different productions throughout his career. Rest In Peace Garry.

I'm terribly saddened to hear of Garry's passing. I'm known him since we were teens; he was pretty cool being the youngest DJ at KLUC, and he was quite good. In the early 70s he told me to come over and watch auditions for UNLV's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Imagine my surprise when Mr. Harris called my name; Garry had submitted my name on the audition roster; I had no music, no make up and was ready to smack him one. I've always been greatful for his taking that initiative. Garry made tremendous contributions to the Arts; I am saddened to think I won't bump into him again at LVH or a local concert...this is just a sad reminder that life is not predictable and one moment in time, may be the last time you see that person. Garry was always very kind to me and I will miss him. My Deepest Condolences to his family.

I'm saddened by Garry's untimely passing. Our life through the years skating with Teresa & Garry , then working lights with him running sound .
We had many a good time, laughs & fun. I remember @ Hilton between shows he would have to go to his car to take his dog home b/c it wouldn't get out of the car for him to go to work, the whole crew loved when he brought in video of Flying Foy footage to watch... Love you Teresa

So very sorry for your loss. We have know Garry ever since we moved here in 1976. We used to get to gather for Sushi at the Kabuki Sushi and always enjoyed being with Garry as he really liked sushi and talk show business. I would always enjoy getting a call that he would be working doing my time in Local 720.
